Has anyone been following the University of Idaho murders?

someone just told me the PC is 1:00 mountain time

Thank you for posting this @whitewave. I hope this is the guy and they have enough evidence for a conviction. His mug shot is already being shown. He had the white Elantra with him in Pennsylvania. The warrant was issued for first degree murder. These kids and their families deserve justice.

PC stated that his DNA was found at the crime scene. That would be very compelling evidence if he had not had contact or involvement with these students prior to their murders.

@MissGotRocks I’ve been following this case and am home with the flu so really honed in today. Who is PC? Police Chief? I watched the Press conference (PC?) and they wouldn’t divulge any information until he is returned to Idaho. The warrant remains sealed. Where did you hear about his DNA being found? I would be interested in reading about that.
Chief did say they have an Elantra (which is the vehicle they have sought since 12/7). Also, heard suspect asked officers, “Has any one else been arrested,” making me wonder if he had help.
I feel so relieved for the families and communities. May they somehow be able to find peace at some time….

I found this regarding DNA but not sure if it’s confirmed as the police Chief wouldn’t.

During the press conference (PC), the police chief said they found his DNA at the scene. I was a bit surprised he said that as they did not divulge much info. I guess maybe that explained the arrest but of course so much more info that we can’t find out until he is in Idaho and has his first hearing there. He did not say how they matched his DNA but guess the car story explains that part. He also said something about him killing these four people - made me squirmy as he hasn’t been convicted yet. I am sure that is why they don’t want the police talking to the press. Things slip out that might come back to bite them. I was surprised that the police chief came back and took questions. I know the pressure is immense for them to tell what they know from the public but really not a good idea. Defense lawyers will be all over that. It is referenced in this news article as well.

Thank you @MissGotRocks I was also surprised that he took questions. I’ll take a read at that article. So sad.

It is truly sad - just a waste of four young lives. As the police chief said, nothing can bring them back. I guess justice for the victims and their families is the best you can hope for now. My kids went to college and I think any parent that has experienced them living away from home feels a bit of a gut punch hearing about these murders. Just a sickening feeling.

Yes, same. It’s an unbelievable tragedy…

I have been following this case, too. It's beyond horrific, but law enforcement has done an amazing job finding this sociopath (I heard him called that today on news programs). So interesting that he was in a PhD program in Criminology. I think the remark about arresting another person was deliberate manipulation on his part. I am thankful this guy will no longer be free to endanger others. It is incredible the evil people can do.

@Slickk The police haven't been able to release much information.

It’s being reported that the suspect is a criminology PhD student at Washington State University. My guess is there will be many rumors in the following weeks regarding this case. Daily Mail and Reddit have stories about the case today. If the link @whitewave posted is true it was bone chilling. I can’t imagine being one of the family members reading this.

I stayed away from this case for a few weeks. It was just too heart breaking to read about. This case and Delphi Indiana murders case have haunted me and remind me of the thread you started awhile back @Autumn in New England .

I know honey... :cry2: It's difficult to straddle the line between staying informed and overloading your head (and heart) with the harsh realities of life. I had also been avoiding following this case too closely. I actually asked my mother to stop updating me. Glad the police seem confident this is their "man," but I agree that they should remain tight lipped for now.

when saw his picture and heard his background all I could think of was Ted Buddy. Pure Evil. Praying for those families.

I am relieved that they found the killer (hopefully but with dna it seems very likely). What I cannot understand is how he managed to kill four people in this manner. How were the others not alerted during the attack of the first victim? It’s something I have been so perplexed about since this story broke.

All I can say is, thank goodness police departments have DNA science available to them, or I'm not sure we would have ever known who the culprit is. Apparently they used DNA genealogy (23 & Me, and the like) to find relatives of his, and then narrowed it down. I'm also shocked that he still had the car. But who knows, maybe his intent was to leave the car in Pennsylvania.

Also, I’m sure his neighbors in Pullman must have alerted the police to his car since he stayed at WAU until finals ended!
I am not surprised the others didn’t hear because of the layout of the home. The third floor bedrooms were not above the second floor bedroom. They were in the back of the house (Addition) and the second floor bdrm was in front. Also, surely they had doors closed and had most like imbibed quite a bit that evening.
I have read that Xana and Maddie worked at a vegan restaurant and he was a vegan…wonder if that’s where he “met” them.

This perplexes me as well. No one screamed? They were sleeping in pairs, so how do you kill so fast that the room partner doesn't have time to react in some way that might alert others? I wonder if his field of study gave him some advantage in that? I think we all assume that someone studying criminology is doing so for altruistic reasons. It is quite chilling to think that a sick mind might be studying it because it titillates him, to hone his technic, or to help him get away with murder.

Unfortunately, the horror for these four families is just beginning, as the legal process will likely be very long, and they will have to re-live this nightmare many times over before they get any kind of closure.

@RMOO not sure if this is true, but I’ve read that there was a scream recorded on the police officer’s body cams who were with the alcohol call on the field. I also think others did hear a scream, but again, in a college/frat atmosphere, would that really cause concern? It’s certainly perplexing.

It is a bit puzzling but all four of them - and maybe the other two in the house that were spared - were asleep in their beds. They had all been out that evening and makes me wonder if they had been drinking. If so, they might have been dead asleep - if you know what I mean. They were all killed in the bed so I assume he just entered and started stabbing them with very little time for them to react. It was stated that some had defensive wounds but even awakened, they apparently didn’t have time to get up. They were also on different floors so screaming probably wouldn’t have been as easily heard. They said that there appeared to be no forced entry so were the doors unlocked? I am really interested to know if he knew any of them. Just seems too perfect to have randomly chose their house and found them all fast asleep in their beds. He must have been watching them - so creepy!!

If he wasn’t physically watching stalking them, had no in person interactions with any of them and the house opportunity is what the ‘target’ was rather than an individual(s) was.
I still seem to think they will still find digital evidence he frequently visited or even ‘liked’ their SM, as it is rumored.
Unfortunately any talk about the extent of some of the students online presence the murderer could have stalked, some people start to go down the victim blaming route. Ugh!

Rumors are rarely true - look at all the innocent people doxxed/accused in this case - but I do think it’s possible as speculated a Bluetooth connection attempt while he/his car was near the house is a big evidence key.
His Reddit questionnaire was already linked above.
I think other postings will eventually come back to him - there’s at least one rumored on another site after the killings, describing the crime scene and the state he’d ultimately be found in, that seems pretty darn suspicious.
It will be curious to hear what his family knew or suspected, or possibly turned a tip in, before he was being tailed by authorities 4 days before arrest.

Interesting - but in a horrible horrible way. Incomprehensible.

Yes, I am very interested in knowing (eventually) what clues/tips the police had, physical and digital evidence found, etc. But I am also hoping that the police keep all of this tightly under wraps so that they can convict this guy (assuming that he is not mistakenly charged.)

They were all asleep for around an hour after a night of drinking so they were probably in a deep sleep. This psycho started stabbing them right away and from what I’ve read probably knew exactly how to do it so they would not be able to scream. He had been talking with other killers asking them how they did it.

These poor kids never had a chance. The defense wounds could have easily come from them just lifting up there arms to protect themselves, not actually fighting. Ethan probably was the only one who had a chance at fighting but sadly he wasnt able to. The girls did not have the strength to match a man.

I know first hand that if you are asleep in your bed you are completely vulnerable. You are laying down under covers, you can’t move and break free quickly. I had not been drinking the night I was attacked and police said he had been watching me, gave me enough time to be sleeping soundly. I didn’t hear anything until he was standing over me and about to put a pillow over my face. My apartment was on the second floor and the patio door was locked. The police told me it probably took him all of a minute to open that door. The police demonstrated how he did it. Reading about this case has been hard. I feel so lucky to be alive.

I don't think he has been mistakenly charged. The police chief yesterday clearly stated they had found the person who committed the murder. There was no presumption of "innocence until proven guilty" talk by any of the people who spoke. They likely have ironclad evidence. And to me, this is one of the only scenarios that makes any sense at all.

Aside from them all being deeply asleep, the other two girls were in kind of a basement apartment. So it is very understandable that they wouldn't have heard anything.

@Calliecake Oh my gosh, I am terribly sorry that you experienced such a terrifying event. I am extremely thankful you survived it.

Wow @Calliecake, I had no idea you had been a victim of something like that either! So thankful that your life was spared but can only imagine the fear and angst it must have caused you. How awful!

Seems he isn’t fighting extradition and thinks he will be exonerated.

I’m so sorry you suffered through something terrible like that @Calliecake . I can’t even imagine how much that would affect your life forever going forward. ((Hugs)) to you.

I believe his car was about a 2013 Hyundai so I don’t think it had Bluetooth, but his phone certainly could have tired to connect.

I have also read the scream was a hoax by a YouTube sleuth.
