Just some eye-candy, even for those who can't visit.

"On Tuesday, April 1, the Winston Red Diamond and 40 other fancy-color diamonds will make their debuts at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History in Washington, DC. Tipping the scale at 2.33 carats, the Winston Red Diamond ranks among the largest diamonds ever bestowed with the coveted “Fancy Red” color grade by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA)."

"The 40 diamonds in the Winston Fancy Color Diamond Collection range in color from a soft peach to a deep teal and in size from 0.40 to 9.49 carats."

The yellow EC is 4.11ct, but I'm not sure if that reflects the weights of the other stones in that group photo (i.e., if the proportions were maintained).

I was expecting at least one 'well that red looks like a garnet' comment so far :lol-2:

Weeeeeell...

If you ask me, a significant portion of the coloured diamonds (in general) pale when compared to the colour their respective CS counterparts display... And furthermore, some coloured diamonds are straight up just plain ugly.

However. Donating such a valuable collection to a museum where it can be preserved, observed and enjoyed by the general population who wouldn't otherwise have the chance to view something like this in person, is a gesture that must be respected. It doesn't seem the place to critique the quality of the stones.

The colors are more muted, but the higher refractive index really helps with more fire and smaller tilt windows.

I may take an extended lunch one day and try to see the exhibit on a weekday. About a 20-odd metro minute metro ride for me. I'm sure it will be really busy on weekends.

I hope they dust them more often than they do the DeYoung diamond. That thing was dustier than a haunted mansion when I was in DC in February.
