Do most people choose a halo setting to enhance a diamond or to make it appear larger??

Re: Halos - do most people get them to enhance a diamond or

I got a bezel halo with diamonds to emphasize the octagonal shape of my asscher and add some extra glitter since my stone is a step cut. The size boost was a bonus!

Re: Halos - do most people get them to enhance a diamond or

What a great question! I was considering a halo, but my intentions were to enhance my RBC. I am anxious to hear from others.

Re: Halos - do most people get them to enhance a diamond or

That was a great thread - what a difference a halo makes. I think if it's a HUGE diamond maybe not necessary but it is nice how there is a contrast between the smaller modern cut rounds next to a cushiony stone.

QUESTION I should have put with my post : :read:

Do you think a ring is pretty based on the setting or the diamond? It seems like the ring IS the setting in most cases.....u know?
Like most people do not have plain solitaires - I see all of the detailed settings out there and I think if u don't like your setting or if u have a diamond but no setting, it's like - what do u do?? :twirl: :twirl: Did I make sense?? :cheeky:

For instance, I am now buying a whole new wedding set FIRST, then finding a stone to fit it a few months from now........

Gosh, that is a little risky unless it is for a very common size diamond such as one carat or something. Is the setting not available later?

Re: Halos - do most people get them to enhance a diamond or

I have a fancy light yellow that i use a double halo of icy white melees to enhance. The white diamonds really bring out the color of the center stone.

I have 2 RB in solitaire and I find myself always wearing the bigger one. So I'm going to halo the smaller RB to create a totally different look AND to increase finger coverage.

Re: Halos - do most people get them to enhance a diamond or

That sounds pretty!!

I could get the setting later but I could fit something in a certain range, so it should be fine and fun! LOL
It is an 11mm halo - and band is like 2 mm. 13mm n to s. Do u think that's too wide?? size 6.5 - 6.75 finger.... :))

Re: Halos - do most people get them to enhance a diamond or

I have a scalloped halo around a .75 carat MRB. I definitely enjoy the enhancement, but I didn't at all choose the halo for that reason. (I have a size 3.75-4 finger, so the .75 looks sizable enough on my finger, I think. -- though I dunno, after having this halo around my finger, maybe the next ring will have to either be a halo or a much larger stone! :P ) In fact, I thought I didn't like halos! I was looking for a vintage-feeling setting for a much smaller stone I already owned, and then stumbled upon/fell in love with this scalloped one.

and now, I very much like halos.

Re: Halos - do most people get them to enhance a diamond or

For myself I am not a fan of using halos to make a diamond appear larger, so when I fell in love with my setting, I wanted very very dainty melee for my halo. I believe the melees on my halo are 0.5 to 0.6 pointers each, surrounding a 3.02 cushion.

And, to reply to your second question in your later post, for me it was the setting that made most of the difference for me. Having upgraded and changed settings several times, and prowling for yet another upgrade, I notice it's the "total package" i.e setting that complements the shape and size of the diamond I have, that really makes my heart go pitter patter!

Re: Halos - do most people get them to enhance a diamond or

Just wanted to clarify - I didn't mean to imply that making a stone look larger is the motivating factor for everyone who chooses a halo - but after being on PS for a while I've noticed that some people seem to choose a halo for the extra finger coverage and/or to make the stone look a bit larger. But as mama monkey pointed out, some people just like the way they look! :cheeky: I think halos do a nice job of giving some extra finger coverage.

My motivation was to balance my chubby fingers! :)

Re: Halos - do most people get them to enhance a diamond or

Personally... I just love the look.

My diamond is a 1.87ct AVC, which is 7.1 x 7.5mm. So on my 4.25 finger, it has plenty of size on it's own. But I really love the "vintage" look that a delicate halo gives, and so I went with the "style". The added finger coverage is a bonus. But I didn't want a large halo, or something that would look "trendy" or that I would tire of... So I chose a 1mm halo, which I think is made of .5 pointers. I believe it accentuates the center stone. I also have the halo slightly "tucked" under the stone and it is slightly tilted downward, to show off the center stone even more.

I think there are a lot of reasons people choose halos. And there is no wrong answer. I just got my new ring and I hope I love it just as much 20 years from now as I do today!!

Sorry to "photo hog" this thread... but I've only had my ring for 2 days and I am still so excited I can't help it!!

I think that totally depends!
If you have a small, or lesser quality diamond, a beautiful setting can totally make the ring a stunner! If you have a large, or interestingly shaped, or very well cut diamond... then I think the stone will shine on it's own, and a setting will either enhance it, or distract from it.

As for me... I put 3/4 of the money for my ring into the diamond. I LOVE the setting, but in the end, it is mainly to show off the stone!

Re: Halos - do most people get them to enhance a diamond or

I do love a good delicate halo that has that vintage look. I don't like the look of halos with large RB diamonds, I think they look more like flying saucers at that point.

This!

My sister has tiny little size 4 fingers with a 1.25 ct RB. Lucky me, I was the tall sister and have 7.25 size fingers. I got a halo to fill more finger real estate. That's the main reason. I'm getting it bezeled to emphasize the shape and using the halo to add more sparkle like one of the pp said. Mine is a pear though not a step cut.

Also I picked a halo with plain shank so it directed lots of focus to the stone. :)

Good luck with your setting search

Edit: also I just love the way they look on a smaller stone. On larger stones they seem like they are gilding a Lilly. I think of them like any other embellishment on a ring. The bigger the stone the less I think you need. It wasn't intended to trick anyone into thinking my stone is bigger I just wanted real estate.

Re: Halos - do most people get them to enhance a diamond or

I switched to a halo because I wanted a more intricate and interesting setting and really liked the look of a well-made halo. I have a very delicate halo but it still makes the center stone look huge even though it wasn't my goal necessarily.

Re: Halos - do most people get them to enhance a diamond or

Can you guys link me to a few choices or post them here? I am really curious what you would pick for this particular stone .........(my oec)
