That''s one of my gf''s rings placed over a dime. What size ring do you think that is? A dime is 17.91 mm in diameter, which is between a 7.5 and an 8.0 ring size (a 7.5 is 17.7 mm; an 8.0 is 18.2 mm).

I did my best to measure the diameter of the dime and the diameter of the ring on my screen (from the inside wall to inside wall of the ring), to find the ratio of one to the other. For example, (these are made up numbers) if the dime is 3.0 inches across on your screen, and the ring is 2.5 inches across (inside wall to inside wall), then we have a ring with a diameter that''s 83.33% of the dime''s diameter. Then, we have 83.33% of 17.91 mm (dime''s diameter in real life) = 14.925 mm = just over a Size 4.0 ring (see table below). That''s not necessarily my guess; just an example of the math.

So, I have my estimate of the ring size using this methodology, but I''d appreciate if anyone else can do the same exercise to confirm my attempt at measuring/calculating. I would greatly appreciate it!
For your info...
Size 3 = 14.0 mm
Size 3.5 = 14.4 mm
Size 4.0 = 14.8 mm
Size 4.5 = 15.2 mm
Size 5.0 = 15.6 mm
Size 5.5 = 16.0 mm
Size 6.0 = 16.45 mm
Size 6.5 = 16.9 mm
Size 7.0 = 17.3 mm.... and it''s clearly not bigger than that.

Thank you very much!

If her ring is accessible, why not sneak it to a local jeweller and ask them to tell you what size it is??? Alternatively, you could place the ring on a ruler as opposed to a coin which might be a bit more accurate.

I'd guess a 6. But I'd just take it to the jeweler.

She never takes it off. It was only off this one time, unfortunately.

What if you take the photo to a jeweler, with a dime, and see what they say. They could lay their sizer bands on the dime and see which looks the same. Just make sure that the band you set the stone in is not eternity, so it can be tweaked later.

Yeah if you can''t pry the ring off her finger and take it to the jeweler, this is what I would do. But still, there is a pretty good chance that she''ll need to get it sized later so just make sure it is a ring that can be sized later.

If you can''t get it off again I would just plan on sizing it after you give it to her. I hate to see you pay to size it twice.

I''m going to guess more in the 3 to 3.75 range - I just did the same thing with a 4, a 4.5, and a 5, and they were all bigger than this. Hope that helps!

hi mariners1985 :)

here''s my suggestion. it''s fiddly, but it will work for you.

call her closest girlfriend. tell her you MUST know your girlfriend''s ring size. then ask her to tell a great big fat lie...

ask your girlfriend''s friend to tell your girlfriend that she has seen a ring that she likes - not an engagement ring - just a cocktail/dinner ring. but that she wants a second opinion and can your girlfriend pls come with her to the jeweler? when they''re there, the friend says to your girlfriend that she can''t seem to get a sense of perspective on the ring looking at it on her own hand - she wants to see how it would look if she was seeing it on someone else''s hand. "but - hey - i''m not sure if this ring will fit you - what size is your finger?" the friend, or you, will need to clue the jeweler in ahead of time so he/she can say "oh! i just happen to have my sizer thingy here..." your girlfriend isnt going to guess that her best friend, the jeweler, and you are all involved in some conspiracy - especially when you''re not even there. just act disinterested when she says she''s going to look at rings with her friend (i find this isnt difficult for most men) and all should be well.

this plan will work even better if your girlfriend has a friend who is in a long term relationship who can pretend to actually BE looking at engagement rings.

good luck!

she must have a tiny little finger, if that''s a dime! i''d guess sparklesparkle is close... probably in the neighborhood of 3 to 3.5. but justjulia''s suggestion to take the photo to a jeweler and use the sizer bands to compare with a dime is probably your best bet, if you want to truly surprise her!

I estimated her ring to be around 14 mm but it is really hard to tell due to the quality of the photo. I have a size 3 and I placed my ring on a dime - it was approximately the same size. I suspect she may be a smidge below a 3. My boyfriend did the analysis below.

My ring is a size 5.5. With the setting if I put it over a dime it covers it. With 1mm to spare around the dime. I would guess that it is under a 3.

That is the tiniest ring I have ever freaking seen! Lol this is kind of fun, guessing, but I would go with a 3 or a 3.5. My ring, as a 7, fits perfectly around a dime.

Does she have any clue that you''ve started looking for rings? If so, ask her!!

Or... you could be very devious, take her ring off while she sleeps... she''ll probably freak out, but you can assure her that it probably fell off in the bed and you''ll find it later. Then, take it to the jeweler, and tell her you found it under the bed later and give it back... that if you''re sharing a bed now & want to be kinda mean, but 100% accurate.

Otherwise, I have NO IDEA! How big is SHE (height/weight). If she''s 5''4'''' and 110 pounds, I doubt her ring size is a 7, whereas, if she''s 5''10'''' and 180 pounds, I doubt she''s a size 3. I''m 5''7'''' and 165 pounds with an athletic build... I''m about a ring size 5.

The only other option... guess... and resize later.

Sorry I can''t help more.

I agree. I am pretty confident she is between a 2.75 to 3.00. Now, we alll have to wait a while before we find out the answer.

size 3 - my size 4''s are smaller than a dime, but not by much

That's tough! If you can slip it off her finger again, maybe you can use a STRING to measure the circumference. Just take a pen and mark it where the circumference ends.

That would be easier to take to a jeweler to put it around a sizing wand. Remember, thick bands fit tighter than thinner bands -- just something to think about when you're choosing the size for given ring!

I like your method, but I'd rather have the correct size for sure than try to calculate it off a photo.

Or... if the string method doesn't work, do you have a ruler?

Can you measure her finger with string in her sleep when she's asleep?

Measure the diameter of the ring -- the width straight across.

Circumference = 3.14 X Diameter

The jeweler will know what size will fit that circumference. Or you can just measure out a string and put it around a sizing wand at the jeweler! Good luck!

OR -- here's a ring size CALCULATOR. Just measure the diameter and you'll know!

Ring Size Calculator:

Why don''t you put it on one of your fingers, see how far down it will go, then go to a jeweler and find a ring that fits you the same way?

(I didn''t read all the responses, sorry if I''m repeating anyone!)

*shrug* i am 5''9" 185 lbs and I wear a 5... I don''t think the pictured ring is smaller than a 3, I''d guess a 4 or 4.5 but it is pretty hard to tell!

DON''T trust her girlfriends. I can tell when my girlfriends are full of it.

What a fun thread!

IMHO CharmyPoo has the most "scientific" response so far.

Good luck mariners1985!

Hi there,

One fact to consider.

The left hand is at least one size smaller than the right.

So on what hand does she wear the ring you measured?

Ooh, not necessarily. Mine is larger, and I''m right handed. I''m going with the crowd saying it is a size 3, that''s soooo tiny.

Ditto...does she wear that ring on her left hand ring finger? If not, then this whole thing will not work!!!

Hi there,

One fact to consider.

The left hand is at least one size smaller than the right.

So on what hand does she wear the ring you measured?
The left hand is often smaller than the right because, generally speaking, the dominant hand is slightly larger in most people, and most people are right-handed. My left-handed friends, for the most part, have larger left hands. As you can see from Lyra's post, it doesn't always hold true.

I would disagree that the dominant hand is "at least one size smaller." My left hand is about a half-size smaller than my right (I'm right-handed). A recently-engaged friend of mine also has about a half-size difference between her left and right ring; she is left-handed, and her left is slightly bigger.

So, obviously, it does matter on which hand she wears the ring you measured. My FI took rings out of my jewelry box to measure them, but he didn't realize that my left hand would be smaller, and I didn't have any rings that I wore on my left ring finger (saving it for my e-ring, of course). The ones he had measured were for my right ring finger, and they were even a little on the loose side. The ring ended up about 3/4 of a size too big, and it had to be sized twice to get it to the proper size.

Another thing to consider is whether she might like to have a tight fit for her engagement ring or a loose one. I like mine to fit fairly tight, to the point where it is pretty difficult to get it off when it's hot. Others like to wear theirs loose. This could mean a quarter- to half-size difference depending on her preference.

ETA: I just checked out my own e-ring over a dime, and just eyeballing it, it looks to be very similar to your photo. I wear a size 2.5. I also put my size 3 RHR over a dime, and it looked to be just a little bigger than the ring you posted. I'd venture to say the ring in your photo is roughly a 2.75.

I am left handed and my right hand is bigger. Left hand is approximately half a size smaller - left = a size 2.75 and my right is 3.125. However, I am having my ring made at 3.125 for my left hand - I want it a little bigger in case it swells up during the summer. The ring came back to be a size 3.25 and spins all the time - I worry that it is going to fly off.

Anyways, it''s hard to get the ring size right without exact measurment. I bought a ring sizer and kept trying it out until I found something comfortable. Just get it approximately right and be prepared to re-size slightly or get those sizing beads.

Can''t wait to see the answer!

Wow- everyone is showing such an interest. I appreciate everyone''s comments.

By the way, the ring shown does go on her left hand ring finger.

If you get ahold of it off her finger, just press the ring onto a bar of soap and take the soap to a jeweler.

For fun, I just did this trick with my 4.75 wedding band that is about 1.2mm thick. The outer diameter was exactly the same size as the dime.

This is a fun thread! I wonder if you could just ask her in a way that wouldn''t make her suspicious?

FI asked me to make him a card with all my sizes so he could shop for me whenever it was gift time. Ring size, clothing size, shoe size, etc.
