Well, i think ultimately it depends on your priorities. Some would freak if they saw an inclusion so they stick with VS, VVS and would sacrifice in color. Personally I think in a princess in that size you don''t need to spend the money on VVS when you can go VS2 or SI especially if you are on a tight budget.

Sorry about that, Dan. I usually look at the idealscopes first, but I''ve gotten so used to GOGs stones being gorgeous, I skipped it this time. Assuming is never good. The idealscope on the Superbcert looks

I know what you mean Ebree!! =)

Hi Dan,

If she is a nurse
face23.gif
, then let me tell you ...

Size of stone isn''t going to matter, big vs small, what is going to be important for her is the setting.

Try and find a setting that has a low profile. It is so hard to get those darn gloves on & off, let alone if you do end up getting them on, sometimes the gloves rip where the diamond setting protrudes upward.

Anyone who has to put on gloves to work, really are limited sometimes with what will actually work.

Good luck!

So as far as color goes...for the average person, is there a noticable difference between say a F and and H in the size stone that I am looking at?
Also, so here is what I am looking at when I speak to a vendor tomorrow.... .8-.9ct : G : SI1 with a nice IS image.

I was thinking about the same thing as far as the setting...she had mentioned that she could always wear it around her neck, but I dunno...I really wanted something that would literally stand out you know....but I know it''s what she wants, not what I want

Sounds good to me. Stress as ideal a cut as possible. And I completely agree with Ms. Darlin Joy...if she's a nurse that uses gloves, she's going to need a low setting. Here's one to look at:

http://www.whiteflash.com/Engagement-Rings/Styles/Solitaire/X-Prong-in-18k-WGold-for-Princess_768.htm

It doesn't have diamonds in the band, but it's a great setting! Lots of PSers have it (search for it and see the great pictures!), and I believe it's relatively low.

Not all vendors will have IS images available and even if you work with one that supplies them, they might not have what you are looking for in their inventory which will make getting an IS image harder. You might want to check out the gem appraisers website and use their DIY cutting guide for reference to get an idea of what table size, depth, etc you should be looking for.
Check out "old DIY cut grading" on the left hand column of their website and have fun!

Dan,

If she is willing to wear it around her neck then my suggestion to you would also as part of the ring, present her with a very sturdy gold or plat chain with a heavy duty clasp on it.

That is alot safer than what nurses usually do ... Pin their rings to their scrub top with a safety pin, I know many that have either forgotten to put them back on and have gone to the laundry and gone forever, or the safety pin poping open, and well ... good luck if you happen to hear it drop!

Otherwise, she could just wear her wedding band to work and leave the Ering at home. If you do go with a channel set princess cut diamond band for the wedding ring ... she should not have a problem with the gloves.

Keep smiling!

Also, how do you view a very ideal cut versus a very good IS image...which one should I value more?
Does cut take the "ideal" proportions into account because I see a lot of variability within princess cuts, some really shallow, others very deep.

Ebree,

I love that xprong, esp. the one with the bag''s!

I think that even that setting is going to sit a little high, it reminds me of a cathedral xprong.

I know that there are nurses out there, maybe they could chime in on a setting, or what they do.

I don''t have to wear gloves like I used to ... but I remember when the height of the setting would catch on everything. Let alone, we would bang the setting on the bed rails, I worked in Labor & Delivery and in an emergency situation you don''t think about ... I need to take my ring off, or S*#T my glove just ripped body fluids are gushing everywhere, and you pray that you don''t get anything!

That is why most of us started to pin our rings on our scrubs, some of them lost them to the great beyond.

Dan, Has she actually tried on any settings yet? I wonder if she has seen something that she thinks might work for her?

MsDarlinJoy,

I think the picture might show the stone sitting a higher than it actually sits. I've seen a lot of x-prongs browsing through "Show Me the Ring" and other threads and they've always looked to sit rather low to me...which I love! A bezel might be the best bet though...or the ring around the neck idea is a good one too!

Well, she''s an ICU nurse at Duke Hospital, maybe you would know better than I what kind of situations she goes through on a daily basis. We haven''t tried anything on together, but this is because I really want it to be a surprise, she''s not picky and I know that she''ll love anything I give her. Yes, even though we''ve been together for 5yrs now, it will be a surprise to her, if you can believe that. Whenever we go out, I act like I''m poor around all the B&M stores and tell her that I need to save money for a ring, even though I now have it all saved up. So she thinks it''ll be a while, I''m hoping to do it in about a month, I hope that''s enough time....we''ll be going to Hawaii the first week in March, that''s where I hope to seal the deal

Hehehe Mrs Darlin Joy, I hear ya loud and clear!!

I''m a theatre nurse so I don''t wear my Ering to work, as much as I''d love to as it is claw/prong set and doesn''t tangle too well with gloves, plus I''d forever be taking it off. Having worked in ICU I found high set rings quite obtrusive when an emergency presents itself (which they do, given the nature of the place!!!), because as Mrs Darlin Joy said, you often have other things on your mind rather than your Ering! I''d be inclined to go for a bezel set stone that doesn''t sit very high up. How about something like style #5aB on this page, perhaps in a bezel setting? There are some gorgeous princess settings on here! I hope you have as much fun browsing this page as I did

Congratulations! You will not regret this investment, financially and more importantly emotionally (in that you cared enough to give her something so beautiful and plan a wonderful proposal). It is worth more than every penny you put into it!

Let me just make sure....it is very possible to get an Ering ready and set within a month...right, I hope

Also, what vendor wwould you choose for the setting? I''m looking for a large selection, fair prices and of course, good experiences with those who have purchased their ring from here. I''m not looking for anything that I would say is custom, I just want a large selection of in house stuff so that it doesn''t take very long.

I have WF's W-prong for Princess- which I LOVE! It's very similar to the X-prong. It sits low, not at all like a cathedral, and definately lower than a traditional Tiffany 4-prong. I tried them all on when I visted WF last fall.

There's a tiny pic in my SMTR thread that shows the height of the setting:
https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/newly-engaged.37239/

I know this isn't the type of setting you originally mentioned, but just want to give you some options.

Good Luck!
