My mother-in-law is has a major, milestone birthday coming up (and she's mortified about her age). In many ways, she's easy to buy for, but she is moving soon and trying to get rid of many of her material possessions. The only other thing we could think to buy was jewelry (even though she already has a ton). I found her a 14K rose gold necklace with an emerald cut diamond that is bezel set (and the bezel sits horizontal, so it's a rectangle shape on the neck). It is only a .30 diamond, but the quality is good (G, VS1, very eye-clean & sparkly). It's a custom piece and quite unique. It will arrive in a few days and if I like it, I might just order one for myself!!!!

Anyone else have any suggestions on how t make her birthday special? We don't live in the same state, so we are limited as to what we can do. I think I'm going to make her a handmade card too (I scrapbook, so I can get pretty creative).

That sounds really cute! Do you have a pic or link?

Maybe some fresh flowers delivered? Or one of those edible arrangements where it is the fruit cut and arranged to look like flowers?

Or maybe stick to the necklace & card for her b-day and do a special housewarming after she moves.

Momhappy, what a WONDERFUL milestone gift you found! I'm sure she will love it- it comes from the heart and those are the gifts that mean the most!!

Not sure about your time frame, but I have made a few Apple/iPhoto books and they look wonderful when done! Turn around time from ordering to delivery is usually about a week. Thing is, you have to have a variety of pics on your iphoto program to build the book from. My idea was to do a collection of her milestones thru her life - childhood, HS /university graduation, marriage, children, 30's, 40's, 50's, her parents, grandchildren... that kind of thing. Or maybe that's a Christmas gift idea!

Please post a pic of the necklace if you can - I'd love to see it because it sure sounds PERFECT!!

I want to see pictures too! It sounds like a lovely gift that IS very special!

Update: The necklace arrived and there were some quality issues. I contacted the seller and she is refusing to give me a refund. She actually suggested that I give my mother-in-law the necklace and then take it back from her, so that I could return it to the seller for replacement. Huh  Who does that? I am mortified. I have always had nothing but exceptional experiences shopping on this particular site (including lots of unique jewelry items that I have been extremely pleased with). Now I am out the money and a gift for my MIL. I opened a case with PayPal.... :blackeye:

sorry - double post

That sucks, momhappy. How disappointing. I hope you are able to get your money back.

By when do you need to ship a gift to your MIL? Maybe we PSers can help with other ideas.

Oh man. I saw your post in those forums! I posted to tell you to send that thing back (after you file a claim as "not as described"). I kind of suspected this was you, but was really hoping not!!! I am so sorry! I hope this gets worked out.

So far, my claims have been rejected. Still pursuing other avenues. I'm also working on trying to resolve the situation with the seller. I simply don't understand why people can't communicate like respectable, professional adults???? The seller immediately went on the defensive when I told her that the quality was bad. She got all snippity and told me that 100's of her pieces would soon be in department stores, blah, blah, blah.... She said that I must just need my money back (buyers remorse or something), which I find amusing because this is definitely not about money. Oh well, like I said, if all else fails, I end up keeping a diamond necklace that I can wear as a layering piece :)

Did you pay with your CC? If all else fails, go to them.

I'm so sorry that what started out as a lovely gesture has turned this way. :blackeye: I hope you're able to work things out work things out with the jeweler or to salvage the project in some other way.

Final update: Refund rejected and I accepted a replacement necklace, which arrived and is fine. Since I can't gift it as originally intended, I'm keeping it as it will work nice as a layering piece.

Well that's good to here! I'm happy that you are satisfied w the replacement! Any pics to share? the first was definitely sub par, IMO.

Not a happy adventure. I'm sorry it wasn't what you hoped it would be! Good, though, that the replacement is better & worth keeping. I'd like to see pics too. Good for you for pursuing it.

Sounds abslutly beautful.

My MIL is NEVER pelased with anything anyone gives her so we just give her gift certifcates to her hair salon. I sincerely hope when I am that age I'm a lot more gracious.

Im sure she'll love it!

Can you tell us the vendor so we can avoid them?

Sorry for all this aggravation, what a hassle to say the least...would love to see the replacement!
