Hello,

I am offered and E color 1.81 ct SI1 stone, GIA. The price is good, no fluorecence.

Problem is polish and symmetry are GOOD. I was looking for Very Good or Excellent.

Also, since the GIA report is from 2004 there is not cut info on it, but vendor says cut is Very Good.

My questions are:

How different visually GOOD polish and symmetry from say EX or Very Good?

How can I check the cut if it is not in the report?

Thanks !!

Get all the measurements, diameter, depth, crown angle, pavilion angle, table. We can then give you an idea. Have you seen it?

What shape?
If online is it an in-house stone that someone can examine for you?

Hi DengT! Welcome!

I will defer to one of the experts answer your first question but as far as I understand it, "visually" there shouldn''t be a huge difference b/n Good polish and VG or Ex polish, however, I am like you and would prefer, if possible, to get a diamond with Ex''s on both polish & symmetry regardless of whether or not the difference is negligible (silly mindclean thing)

.
If you would like to know more, you can review the "advanced tutorial" listed above under the "Knowledge" section above.

With regards, checking the cut of the diamond ... there are a couple of options.
- You can either have your jeweler provide you with a "sarin report" on your diamond and this will give you all the specs, angles etc that you need to know or, if this is not a possibility,
- You can certainly try the GIA website and put the certification # in their search tool. If this does not give you what you need to know, you can certainly email them to find out. I found them to be quite pleasant and eager to assist.

Good luck!

Good luck!

Here is what I have on the stone:

ROUND Brilliant

7.77 x 7.85 x 4.88

Depth - 62.5%

Table - 57%

Cutlet - None

Polish - Good

Symmetry - GOOD

Cutlet - None

There is no INFO on cut in GIA report, but merhcant claims VERY GOOD

Id pass vg or better is easy on a RB and indicates not a lot of care was taken in cutting it too me.
Get an IS image would be the next step but personally I would keep looking.
Good/good is the area eye visible differences can appear so they have too be checked out by an expert in person but for a round and specially online I wouldn''t bother.

You think I should pass?

Before hastily advising if you should pass or not ... just a few questions?

- Were you able to try to obtain the additional crown angle/pavilion angle information from the GIA website, as suggested above? If you have not ... Here is a link to the GIA Report Check so that you can find out more by entering the cerification#.

- Have you seen this stone in person or have you been able to confirm whether or not any inclusions are visible or if the stone is "eyeclean", meaning no visible inclusions to the naked eye?

- Have you had a chance to read more on polish/symmetry and determined your personal preference? If so, are you comfortable with the Good rating this diamond has for both?

I think both of these links will assist you with your decision making.

I called GIA, they do not have cut info on this stone...the stone is from Union diamonds, I found it through this site.

Anyone ever bought from them? They claim they have 30 day returns

Ditto. Also it depends on what you want, if the proportions work well together and the diamond has good for symmetry and polish, it could be a nice choice potentially if you want a decent make of diamond and not a superideal which is cut to the strictest standards. Not everyone wants a super louper cut! I would see if you can get an idealscope on this diamond along with the proportions. But if you personally want higher for symmetry and polish, then keep looking if that is what you prefer.

I have met the Union guys and they seem quite decent.
I have not heard anything bad and they have listed here for many years, so I doubt they would mislead you

Thank you for all the responses.

I have reviewed more info on the stone and Union Diamonds. Union Diamonds rates the stone cut as premium, which is Very Good by GIA standards according to them.

Bottom line, say stone has VG cut, GOOD Polish and Good Symmetry.

How much difference do you think I will see visually( not under microscope) on G/G stone vs say VG/VG stone or EX/VG stone?

That might be hard to say, being that GOOD is a fairly broad category. I have seen some that are very comparable with VG or EX w/o magnification. And some that have a noticiable difference.

I think its important to have a good trust relationship with whom you are buying from at this point, as they have the stone to visually judge.

If you do end up getting it, I would have it evaluated by an appraiser. They will be able to give you an honest opinion on the polish/ symmetry.

Vendor is Union Diamonds, seems to have good reviews...and 30 day returns

Is it a virtual stone or do they have it on-site so they can look at it?

I''m a bit of a cut snob id pass myself.

Meh...bottom line is that you could easily find a stone with a better cut. I''d pass eventhough this stone is probably not an *ugly* stone by any means.

I agree , a better cut can be found...however the price here is low......I guess a jeweler will have
