I first saw this ring in summer of 2016, when I was on a gem hunt but was making a side trip to visit Diamonds by Lauren, meet @Rockdiamond, and take a peek at whatever goodies he had. In addition to whatever else he showed me - the second-most spectacular of which was an Octavia diamond - he brought out this ring, a Fancy Deep Brownish Yellowish Orange diamond with french-cut sides, all cut by Yoram F, in a handforged setting. I had seen it on the website and been unmoved, but in person, the main diamond was captivating. I thought it was possibly the most beautiful diamond I'd ever seen. It was way over budget but I loved it so much.
So I left, but I never stopped thinking about this ring. Whenever I checked DBL's site, I checked if it was still there, and dreamed about it maybe being available the next time we decided to spend a larger amount on jewelry.
Fast-forward a few years. I become a mother, and we are looking for a ring to celebrate that. My child was born in May, so for a while I was set on an emerald gem, or maybe an emerald-cut diamond. However, eventually, it occurred to me that perhaps my budget was sufficient for this ring. So I commenced refreshing the website, day after day, wondering if I really wanted to spend that much money, when I had originally been trying to keep things under $5k, even though we'd discussed the budget going a lot higher.
And then one day... the DBL website didn't load. It was like a lance through my heart. I rushed to check Pricescope and Instagram to see if anyone had said anything, but no one had - I wondered if maybe they were moving all sales to instagram or something. (The website was back like the next day so more likely it was just a random outage.) At any rate, I couldn't delay!
From my visit 8 years before, I had the office number saved in my phone, because I'm a freak who saves every number I ever call, so I called immediately. David picked up and I think I pretty much aggressively demanded that he sell me this ring, which he was of course happy to do. It was a remarkably smooth transaction and he shipped ASAP.
I spent the entire time between shipping and arrival caught up in the post-purchase anxiety that happens when you can't see the thing you bought, but then it arrived and it was even better than I remembered. The center diamond is gorgeously firey and shifts colors but usually has a golden glow. The french cuts provide that soft glimmer that they're so great at. The setting is both solidly built - has withstood a year of toddler parent life and still looks pristine - and elegant. It doesn't get as many compliments as Big Blue, but it gets its fair share. And, most importantly, I am still thrilled every time I look down at it.
So thank you to David at DBL, and to whatever jewelry gods ensured this ring would stick around until I could buy it.
