Who here has gone from a solitaire to a three stone ring? My very sentimental, no-upgrades kind of husband has surprisingly agreed for me to make my solitaire a three stone ring, if I want. I would keep my .78ct e-ring as my center stone; I held up my .41ct earring stones next to it and really liked the proportions. The only problem is, I''m afraid I''ll eventually miss having a solitaire. Of course I may not miss it all, with more bling on my fingers. Has anyone done this, with thoughts or opinions either way? I do have an OEC set in a trellis solitaire, for times of solitaire-longings.

I haven''t done it, but I can imagine it!
It''s a great win-win... if you have a sentimental dh issue. Keep the org stone and add more.

personally, i don''t think i''d miss the solitaire...

more is better!

I went from a solitaire to a three stone ring, but in my case the three stone was all new. I had the old solitaire reset and I still wear it as a right hand ring. However I can tell you that I LOVE the three stone ring and would give up the solitaire without question if I had to choose between them. The three stone design gives a lot of bling across the finger!!!

Yeah, for me, the solitaire is gorgeous and it says "I''m getting married!"

then after a while, it''s ok to move on and get more diamonds!

I had a solitare originally and then switched to a three stone (new center stone, too). I don''t regret it and always liked the look of a three stone over a solitare. When I had the single stone, I wanted a wrap to put on with it with two stones to make a three stone so I guess it''s what I always wanted!

I went from a round solitaire to an emerald cut three stone ring...never regretted it, though now I upgraded again and the stone is too large for a three stone, though I loved the look. Now I just have baguettes on the sides...

I went from a solitaire to a three stone ring - in fact my current three stone ring is my second which has bigger side stones than the first. While I love some of the solitaire settings we have seen as of late, I don''t think I''d ever be able to give up my three stone mounting again. It limits you to four prongs - unless you do something like Al has - all three of her stones are in six prongs. I like the width it gives you and the stones sort of play off each other!

The other thing you do have to figure out for yourself is proportions. I wanted accent stones - not three similar sized stones. You are right to use your earrings to get some idea - I would also suggest you go to a few places - maybe Mervis or Charleston Alexander since you are in the metro area - to try on a host of three stone ring mountings. They can drop a CZ in your stone size in the center prongs to give you an idea of what it looks like. I tried on many that I liked but I just didn''t like them on my hand. My fingers are short and ring size on left hand a 5.5 so the larger trellis settings, large trillions or pears just didn''t work with my center stone size. I don''t know if I would ever be comfortable having one made for that reason alone. Quest could probably do waxes that you could try but you would really have to have your ideas pretty solid for a wax to be made.

I love trying on mountings - I am going to go again one day. Who knows what I will find?

Good luck - I know you have said your hubby didn''t want to trade in your original stone. It''s a great way to get additional bling but keep the sentimentality of your engagement stone!

You already know what I think!!! But that said, before my upgrade I had a solitaire and once I had my 3 stone ring I never looked back. Well being on PS, sometimes I look back but not for very long, hehe. Go for it!!!

I did it for my first wife and she loved it. I matched her original .64 round brilliant with a .65 and put a 1.38 round in the center. She was very sentimental about her original ring too, but I kept both her diamond and most of her original setting. My jeweler simply cut out the original head and part of the band and put in a 3-stone head. He did such a fantastic job that you would never notice that the ring was pieced together. I agree you should go for it.

have you considered a solitaire wrap?

Sunkist- I think this is a wrap- something that "wraps" around your solitaire, giving it the look of more than a solitaire.

Lucky woman! I don''t think I''ll be getting a 1.38ct round myself

but hopefully I''ll have a little more of a substantial look.

It will definitely look more substantial. Let us know what you choose - new bling to look forward to!

I LOVE GemKlctr''s idea and the wrap idea too. If you can''t do the upgrade moving your main stone to the side, the wrap would allow you to keep your original e-ring intact for those times when you still want to wear it as a solitaire.

The other question is are you planning to wear your new 3-stone with your weding ring or as a stand alone? If you are going to wear it with your eternity band, then you''ll probably want to have a 3-stone ring made and not do the wrap.

Whatever you decide, I do think the 3-stone is a great way to expand your bling!!!

When we became engaged a few years back, I received my diamond in a solitaire setting and converted it to a 3-stone the following June.

I went from a single 1.24 stone to 1.24 with .30 sides.

The bling factor goes WAY up because you have 3 times the facets reflecting light. People loved my ring as a solitaire, but they JAW-DROPPED when it became a 3-stone.

I felt strongly about getting fairly small sides that would still showcase the attention on the center...and I could have even gone with .25s.

Are there days when I long for a honking, huge look of a floating solitaire? Yeah, there are. But, those days are far outweighed for me by the days that I just loooooooooooove all the added personality of my 3-stone.

Truth is, I want one of each style! Variety, baby. But, until I become the newest lottery jackpot winner, I have to stick with one style, and I''d choose my 3-stone all over again.

I think my ring has more of a "romantic" look about it now than it did as a solitaire.

Oh, and about the wrap thing.....

That was my initial plan. I wanted a wrap so I could wear solitaire alone, or choose the 3-stone look. However, the feedback I got overwhelmingly was to scrap the idea. Unless you solder them together, the wrap often doesn''t sit snugly with the solitaire when the hand is in motion. Also, the metal of the wrap rubbing against the solitaire over time will not look great either.

This was only anecdotal info, but it made sense to me, and I decided 3-stone was the way to go.

I''m not a huge fan of the wrap. I think Al is right - unless you are going to solder them together there''s just too much motion going on. I don''t know of anyone that went with a three stone ring that would give up the extra bling that it provides. A large solitaire is beautiful but not everyone can pull off a free standing stone on their hand and have it look right - at some point they begin to look too big and too overdone. I don''t have alot of finger space so for me a really huge stone just looks gaudy. If I had longer fingers it might work. I can change the diamond but not the hand!

Al, I''m curious - how did you come up with the idea to do each stone in six prong? Is it maybe modeled after the Leon Mege ring?

I went from a solitaire to a 3 stone ring, but the 3 stone ring was a completely new ring.

I have an EC solitaire for when I want something simple, and I wear both sets equally. I have a rb which I''ve been meaning to reset, and couldn''t make up my mind about the setting. I also have my original e-ring stone reset into a ring with channel set pink diamonds.

I love my 3 stone ring and don''t regret getting a 3 stone one bit!

There are different setting options even with a three stone ring. The diamonds in my three stone ring are set in semi-bezels. That Vatche truffle setting is also quite lovely.

Logan Sapphire, Congrats!

I never thought you'd be able to get your husband to budge! I miss my solitaire at first but hardly anymore! Go for it!

P.S. I don't like the wrap either get the three stone ring and make sure the band is not thicker than your diamond band. I think it would look great if the three stone ring sat flush with your band. Of course in my IMHO.

I did. And, yes, I sort of miss my solitaire.. but I do love my sapphires. I am thinking IF I ever go back to a solitaire, I will keep my original ring and wear it on my right hand.. I''m not sure though..

I love my ring.. but I do miss the classic elegance of my solitaire.. and.. do you think I would EVER consider telling FI? Napes!!! lol He''d kill me.
