You need to decide on shape before you can decide on anything else.

You must decide for yourself if a round cut diamond suits you more than a cushion cut diamond. Diving into fancy cuts introduces a whole new factor system, and makes finding the perfect one for you more difficult.

Nb. I am taking it for granted that you are after a round brilliant. Other cut models can play against color, but rarely do.

I would definitely go with a round as it will usually appear larger than most other stones (assuming you like them equally). It's MUCH harder to find a well cut stone in any other shape, and well cut cushions are rare. I would not consider buying a 4 ct J modern round brilliant. I can tell you that there are people here who started out with lower colors and have now moved to higher colors. I color is a good value and is not going to show the tint that J color will. I'd rather have a 3.5 ct I VS2 over a 4 ct J SI1 any day. Cut is number one and I will list some parameters below to help you narrow down GIA excellent cut stones to the ones that are more ideal cut. I love fluorescence and would be fine with a stone that had it.

What i would luke to know is WHY jewelers say that step cuts appear the whitest and as long as a stone is shallow is a dirrect correlation to it being whiter. Ive never heard thus before.
I find this so fruatrating that,here you are, purchasing such an $$$$$$ item and these are either blunt lies or i dont know.

How,as gemologist do you not know the truth about this. ?

We all understand each stone has its own attributes and fingerprint,but there has to be some common ground to explain to a customer.

I uses to have an emerald cut of gia : e, vs1 so im used to icy white. But i like the warmth of an i in rounds. So.... we will see where i end up. I think the cushion is out as it hangs on to color more and they appear smaller. Hmmmm....
Wondering what other shapes give appearence of large other than round. . . . .

Clarity is vs2 (completely eye clean), 4.5 ct, I bought from whiteflash, it has strong flour. The strong flour may help but it also looks white indoor. Whiteflash was very good with their service. Seamless experience. I have also attach a pic with my f/g band and I don’t see a much of a difference if any. I knew I love the stone the moment I saw on their website, I find that if i have any initial reservation and went ahead, I often regret vs. listening to my first instinct. I hope you you find your next dream stone. Pls share a pic of your E color emerald.we love all shapes and sizes.

Re. step cuts, I have not heard the same said much. Anything goes! The cut is the least common - by very much, among fancy color diamonds as it is said to not 'hold color' [the effect seems patchy rather than overall lighter, to me].

Re. 'shallow thus bright', facets cut at a shallow angle typical for diamond, look like mirrors & the flash off them is too bright to have 'color' at all. Any cut plays around this critical angle [eg. particularly bright round brilliants are talked about as 'Bright Ideal Cut' around here.]
