Girdle thickness

Does anybody know what the right girdle thickness is for a round diamond? I wnat to make sure the prong/claws don''t chip it during setting and it doesn''t chip during eveeryday use. Should it be faceted?

Anywhere from slight thin to slightly thick is pretty much acceptable. Medium to slightly thin is in the ideal range.

Faceted is common today, but not a real durability issue. It is just a nice factor in a good color and well cut diamond. In an I/K color stone, a non-faceted girdle may make the stone look a little whiter.

AGS will deem a girdle thickness between, 0.5%-3%
as a zero grade which means within the ideal perameters.

Some experts will suggest a 0.7% as the acceptable minimum.

You must also take into account that the thinest and thickest part of a girdle thickness may only encompass
a very small section of the stone.


Naturally one whom sets a diamond with an extrememly thin girdle must be careful, but the risk of chipping even with anormal girdle thickness can still occur...

It really all depends how careful your setter is during this process. Usually a setter will first examine the the stone and see where the thinnest sections are, and
avoid placing the prongs over them.

If you still have concerns and or questions, maybe you should contact an expert appraiser to help you out,
buy examining the diamond with concerns to this issue.
