Hi,

Does anyone have the text of the *official* definitions GIA uses for its clarity grades? I''ve seen others around on the net, and I thought I remember seeing someone post what he took to be GIA''s official definitions from an eBay auction, which then someone corrected by posting the actual definitions. I''d really appreciate it if someone could post them or send them on to me.

I wonder why they are so hard to find. Hmmm...

Thanks in advance!

I doubt there is one - the grades are fully 'determined' by a carefully restricted process. Otherwise, there are plenty of definitions floating around, even in GIA docs

without being binding (and neither are those grading reports, if regarded legalist-ically).

Mara got through some of the GIA dimaond intro for fun... she should know better. PM ?

Thanks for the quick reply!

I completely understand that the definitions won't be absolutely precise, and can't be used in a mechanical fashion. There is, as I understand it, a great deal of judgment involved in a great many cases, and the definitions are simply supposed to be a guide. But I guess what I was asking is: Is there a canonical version of this guide to the clarity grades?

For example, the definitions I've seen define VS, and indicate that VS1 and VS2 are grades, but don't indicate how to distinguish those. I guess I would be surprised if that was the extent of GIA's guidance in something so basic.

Thanks again for the reply, and I'll take you up on the helpful suggestion to PM Mara.
