I want to upgrade my center diamond to the 3/4 carat range. I know that i's melee size to some of you.

My current diamond is .53 AGSO E VS1 and is 1.5 HCA EX EX VG VG and measures 5.21mm and is mounted in YG so going to a G shouldn't make any difference in whiteness of the diamond once it is mounted.

I am thinking about getting this diamond. The colorless ones in stock where I can upgrade are AGSO but are all SI1 and their reports had enough inclusions to make me go AAK!

HCA Score 1.3 EX EX EX VG

Some of the generic tables I've seen on ideal cuts don't want the table any larger than 56%. Is 57% too large?

Measurements: 5.87 - 5.91 x 3.59mm
.75ct VS2 G
Depth: 60.9%
Table: 57%
Crown Height: 15.0%
Crown angle: 34.5°’
Pavillion angle: 40.8°
Crown: 15%
Pavillion: 43%
Star Length: 55%
Lower Half: 75%
Cutlet: None
Girdle: Thin to medium faceted
Polish: Excellent
Symmetry: Excellent
Fluorescence: None

Another one they have at another store so they could bring it in for a "huge deposit" is AGSO with this info:
Measurements: 5.75 - 5.80 x 3.54mm
.718ct VS2 F
Depth: 61.3%
Table: 56.2%
Crown Height: 15.0%
Crown angle: 34.7°’
Pavillion angle: 40.7°
Crown: 15.2%
Pavillion Depth: 42.9%
Cutlet: Pointed
Girdle: 1% to 3.5% faceted
Polish: Ideal
Symmetry: Ideal
Star Length 49%
Lower Girdle Length: 77%
Fluorescence: Negligible

This one scores 1.0 on HCA with EX EX EX VG

Your thoughts and opinions welcome.

With the cheat sheet I have the table goes 54% to 57%*. I think the numbers from the frist stone look pretty good.
Any pics/idealscope?

*I believe I got the cheat sheet from Prosumer Lorlei.

Sidebar: Is there enough of a size increase from 0.53ct to ~0.7 cts for you? Do you want to hold out (e.g., save a bit more) for a 1ct + diamond in your specs?

For my taste, 57% is really really excellent, as 55% is.

Nothing to gain by worrying about table size in a vacuum. everything in proportion, and if the proportions work well together the stone will be pretty, though there are certainly nuances.

I really dislike those "cheat sheets" - they are overly restrictive and fail to recognise that most important fact: that it is all about how proportions work *together*, and a number of different combinations can make for a beautiful stone..

In any case, numbers on both those stones look just fine together - including table size :))

Well said.

Marcy can you get any images of the diamond to post?

Thank you for your opinions and comments.

The GIA diamond was the only GIA I found on their website (in my size range and color range) that scored less than 2 on the HCA. I am glad so many of you think the table is fine.

They do have a .84 that scores 1.6 EX EX EX VG and is 6mm. It is not in their stores though so I would have put down a deposit for them to get it in. I will post that info in another post.

Tyty, I have seen different numbers on cheat sheets and I am sure they are all pretty close. Sadly I cannot get any pictures or idealscope images.

Antelope1, good question. The last time I looked at the .75 ct diamond I didn't think it was worth the upgrade. I generally don't like RB more than about 6mm on me so I don't know if I'd like anything larger than about 90 ct. Of course as my husband just said it may seem large at first but then I get used to it. I will probably look at the .80 to .90 ct. range when I go look in person. I can afford that much of an upgrade now but couldn't go over that. The nice thing about this place is I only have to spend a dollar more on an upgrade so I could work myself up a few times a year. Sadly, it would drive me and my husband crazy trying to decide what I want.

Thanks Queen Mum. I really like the diamond I have now so I want to make sure a new one will perform equally as well.

Yssie, you are so right. The cheat sheets don't tell the whole story and the right combination is what counts.

Karl, I cannot get images to post. Even if I take in a camera they don't allow you to take photos in their store. One of the reasons I want to upgrade my ering is my EC RHR (which you helped me on) is a 3/4 ct. If I don't spend much on this upgrade I might look at upgrading the EC diamond a little bit too. I honestly like it so much my gemstone rings hardly see the light of day anymore.

I like this one a lot for a few reasons. I like the small table and I like the short lgfs at 76, that combo should give you nice chunky fire and also a chunkier look to the scintillation. I find it makes for a lot of visual interest.

Will you be setting this diamond in your present setting? I think that if you change to a solitaire and get into this size range you will be very happy with the different look on your hand.

I also think you should listen to your husband and get a bigger diamond than you think you want ;))

I agree with the statement that you should get a slightly bigger diamond that you think...that way DSS will not hit as quickly and I do think you will be glad you went just a tad bigger.

As for the 57%...again, you have to look at the whole picture!

Dreamer D - chunky fire and scintillation sound well worth a look at this diamond. I was thinking of keeping my current ering but a solitaire sounds very nice especially with a larger diamond. My fingers are short so a thinner wedding would probably fit my hand better. Thanks for the idea.

AmysBling, DSS sets in very quickly here on PS. Probably no one would notice a difference in my ring but me if I only go with a small change.

Your current setting would look simply amazing with a gemstone!

And if you really want a new look, you could try a plain wedding band too, it really does draw attention to the center stone in my experience.

Dreamer, I could easily see a nice blue sapphire in my current setting. When I first bought my current diamond I went with a very simple set that had small semi bezel set PC diamonds because I wanted my diamond to stand out. Then I found I really missed having an anniversary band. I think that is why I want a bigger diamond is so it stands out again. I feel sorry for the person who waits on me when we go shopping. I will want to try on everything.

I went upgrade shopping yesterday and did like the .75 ct GIA G which I put on layaway because I asked them to bring in the .84 ct AGS0 G. Since I also upgraded my laptop and netbook I probably won't look at rings when I go back to see the .84 ct diamond. If it is a stinker I will get the .75 ct but based on the numbers it should be fine. I am so excited.

:appl: It will be a really noticable upgrade marcy!

What are the plans for your current setting?

Thanks Dreamer. I will probably keep them however there are 2 wedding sets I will give a test run with the diamond. One has thinner bands than I have now with some diamond melee and the other one is very different. I will try to post some pictures of them later tonight.

Here is a ring I thought was very different. It is a 1/2 ctw.

That will be a big upgrade Marcy! I think a 0.75/0.85 could definitely hold its own with a wb and an anni. ring ::) And the set you just posted is beautiful!

marcy! I'm so excited for this new upgrade of yours. It will look stunning and wanted to congratulate you!.. I would have gone with the larger one as well. I also think the set you posted looks beautiful!...

Thank you Yssie and D&T. I am very excited for it. The .75 was larger than my .53 but the .82 I tried was noticeably larger and you could see the difference between the two sizes. I will try the new diamond in the set I posted. I also found a very pretty two tone ring with rose and white gold but I think it would be better suited for a RHR. My wish list never ends.
