GIA report time for FCD

Hello everyone!

I've been collecting FCD for almost 15 years and now hubby wants me to start sending the ones I own that do not have reports to the GIA for insurance purposes, etc. My question for ya'll is can any of you give me an approximate turn around time for this? All of them are .61ct and smaller if that matters, some of which are in my avatar. I just would like to not worry while they are gone, as I've grown rather attached! I did find a thread here in PS that is a few years old saying 4 months or so, but I believe that was for colorless and I don't know if it is different for FCD. Thanks for any help.

I think your best bet would be to reach out to them and see what the turn around time currently is.

Two months ago turn around time was two weeks. I didn’t know it fluctuated that much?

GIA provides estimated return dates, updated daily, on their web site. Select Colored Diamonds from the first drop-down menu on the left side of the page & which lab you'll be sending the stones to. As of right now, reports from the NYC lab for a colored diamond (ct weight doesn't effect the return date on colored diamond reports) are expected to be completed in 2 weeks :))

P.S. GIA has added lab personnel since that thread from several years ago.

Thanks everyone. 2 weeks-ish certainly sounds so much better!

I'm thinking you'll be sending the stones to GIA via Registered Mail (the mode of delivery that Jewelers Mutual strongly recommends)? If so -- and if this is the first time you've sent anything via Registered Mail, try not to panic about the lag time attendant to that mode of delivery!

You’re in the US? I don’t suppose to live close enough to a GIA location to drop off? USPS Registered turns me into a nail-bitten wreck :oops2:

Definitely have to do registered mail as I am in Ga. I have had registered mail sent to me before, ie. most of my gemstones, but none that I've owned and mailed away that I love like these first 2 I'm sending. :???:

May I recommend that you find a jeweler willing to send the diamonds to GIA for you? That way the jeweler can use his supplemental insurance on a Fedex package for you. This will cost a few dollars more than sending via registered mail, but will get there overnight.

Where in Georgia are you located? Perhaps someone here will know a great jeweler that would be willing to help you.

I also like this idea - shouldn't it mean that you won't have to tell the person over the counter "oh, what's inside? A couple of fancy coloured diamonds. What are they worth? Well..."

It might also mean that our OP can get to know a quality jeweler so that she has a great local contact, or may already know a quality jeweler who might enjoy seeing what she has. It is an opportunity to expand her network, or enjoy spending time with an existing part of her network.

That's a great suggestion, thank you! I have visited one of the very few non "mall stores" here in town but have never made a purchase because they tried to talk me into sending back my natural 1.74ct Fancy greenish yellow with a GIA report and buy their 1.9ct "champagne" with no report for more money. I'm not sure, but I actually think it was more like a S or T, and not even in the Fancy category. (I went in looking for a setting.) I left unamused. But I think it would be worth searching out maybe another store. I'm in Macon.
