Do you “love” it?
if it isn’t “loved” for $5,600 I’d return it and keep looking.
While I think the cut is fabulous, the tone is flat to me. I prefer a bit more vividness. And $5,600 is a hunk of money to spend before setting if it isn’t ticked all YOUR boxes.

I’m going to a GIA gemologist Friday, I will see what she has to say but I’m not sure what is meant by tone is flat.

Sapphires are tricky and changeable creatures. Most of them do change the way they look from different lighting to different lighting situation -- and many of them do look better in sunlight. (My experience is generally with blue and pink sapphires, but I suspect all sapphires are a little tricksy this way.) Seeing some in person is good to get a feel for the range that's out there.

That one seems to be a nice color that doesn't go dark. I also suspect you'd be paying more than $5600 for a 4ct stone that is more vivid than that. So it's also a question of how much you're willing to pay.

(I also don't know what "tone is flat" means? The tone seems nice to me, although I generally like light-toned stones better as they don't go dark in low light. Edit: do you mean that it's not vivid enough for you?)

Thank you for your reply! I truly am now confused on what is truly vivid, I feel like I will need to see it to understand and not on a pic. Are vivid stones always vivid throwing flashes? When I think of vivid I think shine but I am now thinking I am incorrect.

Colored stones come down to personal preference. Here's GemWizards color chart for one hue of purple sapphires. Notice that several are marked GEM, and several AAA. Each stone marked GEM and AAA would have the same cost, but they are quit different and could appeal to different people. Some people would prefer some of the stones that marked AA, it's all mater of personal taste.

The first number, (27) is the hue, the second number is the Tone, and the third number is the saturation.

Thank you so much!! I feel like then my stone is medium tone medium hue and medium saturated. So its safe to assume that the ones furtherest to the right are vivid , with a strong tone and hue?

I think your purple sapphire is more pastel hue. To me vividness means “bright intense colour” flashes. Pastel stones to me seem to have more “sparkle” in bright light whereas vivid hue is bright and intense.

I think you are getting hung up on the word "vivid". Vivid is normally a term used with colored diamonds.

Are you looking for more sparkle or a brighter colour? When you look at the stone what do you wish it would improve on?

So the stone on the left is vivid and the right is pastel?

I agree I am, i think reading it so much here then on lots of the vendor sites. I know what matters the most is if I like it. I was looking for a grape color, that shines like mad. I think actually not vivid or deep

More pics and I did a video, trying to see how to upload. The color I was looking for is the color of this bonnet it’s sitting on. I think it is almost exact, I think what I’m missing is the shining like mad, I can’t find good lighting, this was bathroom lighting. The more I look the cut is perfect, beautiful and not wonky but I am no expert by any means. I think I am looking for what a purple diamond would look like as it pertains to shine but with this grapey royal purple color...

I think sparkle, maybe bright as well, I’m sorry it’s hard for me to describe. I feel this color is beautiful but it’s too dark and will black out, but I’m starting to think this is vivid and not what I want bc it’s too dark

a spinel I purchased from Jeff Davies 2 years ago, I think this is vivid and it was a tad dark for my wants, but beautiful

Ok I think I get you.

I bought a yellow diamond many years ago and then imagined that every coloured stone would sparkle like that. I was terribly disappointed when they didn't.

I find spinels way sparklier than sapphire. Chrysoberyl and zircon too.

I find that Sapphire needs a lot of help with cut inorder to sparkle and all the sapphires I own, bar one are a bit butchered in terms of cut.

Interestingly I own a dark teal sapphire that is wonderfully cut into a round brilliant but it still doesn't sparkle. It's just less dark than it otherwise would have been (I only paid $400 for it so no complaints).

Maybe return this and hold out for a spinel?

I think that’s exactly what it is. My engagement ring is a sapphire and diamond and it does shine beautifully with the diamonds but I think I am looking for the shine to be more in the stone but that isn’t realistic. Honestly all the places I have been with the sapphire the diamonds that are good quality don’t shine mad either. Something is always missing with spinal for me, I have two. Is there any sapphire that will shine constantly? Probably no since there is no diamond that will

Hehe ok I can empathize with how you feel about spinel because I'm like that with Tourmaline.

I tell hubby Tourmaline is the stone where sparkles go to die :P2

I went to a GIA gemologist and the attached is what came back, doesn’t necessarily sway me Either way, still unsure, she gave me clarity on saturation/vibrancy etc

More pics in hand, outside, in shade, also little sun. I think I am falling in love with the stone, it is the price I don’t love and don’t want us to overspend. This is the stone I wanted over a year ago for my engagement ring.

Just gotta say, this color shifter looks too pink for my taste in artificial lighting, but boy does it glow in the fourth picture down! :kiss2:

And I love the pink and blue shifts, I think once I went to her office I was starting to see it shift and shift and shift. Under her lens its went cranberry, then a super grape purple, she said she was surprised the GIA report didn't show this as it wasn't that common to get your hands on. She guessed I paid less b/c I got a great deal on another sapphire but she said I did well and will not be able to easily find this color again. The seller is extending the return period so I can have more time to think. In addition she said the cut is beautiful, and when she showed me I don't like too saturated stones, this one has the perfect saturation. Clearly I am falling for this stone LOL. Thank you for your responses :)
