GIA Poor Cut on possible OEC?

Thank you all!

Great find! I wonder if looking for GIA Fair/Poor is a good way to prospect for older cut stones in general.

Yeah I don't know! Most of the reputable places don't seem to even have poor cut stones as options. Since those graded as OEC, Transitionals or Mine Cuts don't get a cut grade. I'm sure there are some of these old cuts that don't quite meet the criteria but are lovely nonetheless. I'm betting people that are selling them that had them sent to GIA aren't saying that they are GIA certed so they don't have to mention the poor cut grade? Because you hear "poor" and you think bad. Shame since I think the faceting on my diamond is gorgeous and unique! I'm wondering if when I take it to my jeweler to have it appraised if I need to even say anything about the GIA grade or just let him form his own opinion?

Oh it’s beautiful! I’m so glad you didn’t let the cut grade put you off what your eyes are seeing because that’s fantastic! Where did you find it?

Very pretty diamond. Congratulations!

Absolutely gorgeous! What a firecracker. You did very well. :appl:

It was an eBay find! I’ve been scouring eBay and Etsy for a somewhat affordable vintage right hand ring with a decent sized diamond. I am so thankful that I posted about it here and got a lot of info and encouragement. Otherwise I might have let the cut grade deter me. It had a bunch of watchers and I knew if someone snatched it up I’d be sad. I’m so happy I made a move and that the seller was willing to work with me on price :-)

Cool idea. I thought I'd give it a whirl for you.

Searching world's largest B2B trading site -
Shape: Round
Size: 0.50-5.00 carats
Cut: Fair or Poor
Table %: <51
Crown %: >15

Only 13 come up. That's not surprising, as only about 1%.- of RBs graded by GIA receive a cut grade of Fair/Poor. Of those 13, most have lower-halves >70 and CA far <40, but I spied a few examples with numbers that could indicate the visual spirit of older styles. Brace yourself for egregious depths.

Interesting @John Pollard! Do you think there are more out there but people just aren’t saying they are GIA certed so they can avoid mentioning the poor cut? After seeing hand shots and more pics, you are pretty sure this is an old “transitionalish” diamond right?

It would be a limited number. GIA has only graded cut since 2006, so any such diamonds with 'fair/poor' on the report would have had to pass through the lab since then. Generational diamonds are usually passed down without reports. Those which re-enter circulation usually come to experienced jewelers OTC or gold/estate buyers who will quickly flip them as-is or sell them upstream for recut and resale. Many who trade in this niche also understand the topic we're discussing here, so the need for GIA paper gets de-emphasized.

The crown and girdle situation imply that. What we can't know is whether it was repaired or retouched sometime during its mysterious journey. Hypothetically that could have reduced the crown angle, with a complimentary narrowing of its pavilion mains, taking it here from what started as OEC or CB. That's wild speculation on my part, but pondering those possibilities is part of the charm of such diamonds.
