I am looking at some stones for a pendant. They recieve an excellent cut rating from their GIA reports but score 4.5 to 5.5 on the HCA. The price is a little under $6000 for a 1.25 plus stone.....Can go smaller in size to get a better stone but wonder if with a halo I will really notice the difference between a stone scoring below the ideal "2" and a 4 or a 5????Especially since this is for a pendant????

please post the angles from the GIA report here please.

The depth is 62.7, table 58, and angles 35 and 41.6

not a combo id consider and not the right combo for a pendant.
The pavilion is too deep at 41.6.

are you looking at a b&m or online?
If online whats your max budget?
color and clarity preference?

Linda, you didn''t mention your color/clarity preferences, so I''m not sure what you''re shopping range is.

I can tell you, though, that you wouldn''t have to go that much smaller to get a well-cut stone. Right now, a top-make H, SI2 stone in the 1.12 ct. range goes for just under the $6k mark; you could probably massage that a little bigger if you were to go to I or J.

Personally speaking, yes, I think people will notice the difference between using a well-cut stone and using an average make stone. I wear a .75 halo pendant (J, SI2), and I''m constantly getting comments from strangers standing next to me in the bank, in the coffee shop, etc. about how sparkly it is.

Have you compared a GIA VG shallow stone that score around HCA1 or lower in a pendant position to a stone like this? If you did you would have chosen a different subject heading.

If you saw the 2 stones side by side after a weeks wear and a bit of grime, you would think the GIA Ex was 2/3rds the ct weight.

can I go smaller in size to get a better stone
size is weight?
Size is mm?
size is comparative visual effect?

what is "better"

I was offered these stones at a B&M. Color is H. The other stone has a black inclusion in the center. Guess I should look for a more shallow stone. I just don''t understand how a stone can get a GIA excellent rating and be a dog!!!!Seems like the cut grade is not very accurate from GIA.

Not a dog, just not good, and not worth the money as about 1/4 of the stone will return little light from face up.
