I am a diamond novice, but after reading many posts I am concerned about the price my BF is about to pay for this stone. I am especially concerned about the table size. Experts, what are your thoughts? Your advice would be much appreciated!

GIA
Cut-Cornered Rectangular Modified Brilliant
6.85x6.46x4.30 mm
1.73 carat
depth: 66.6%
table: 76%
girdle: slightly thick to thick
culet: none
polish: good
symmetry: good
clarity: VVS2
color: H
fluorescence: none
map shows pinpoint, cloud, extra facet
price: $8250

I'm definitely no expert but...

That table is probably too large. I would try to find something below 70% with the table being slightly smaller (around 3% or so) than the depth. A smaller table would most likely give you room for a larger crown height for the given depth, which would give you more sparkle!

However I believe Nicrez's diamond had a smaller depth than table, and she said that helped it flash more white sparks back at her...I'm going to double check her post on that statement though. You also might be able to get a better price if you lower the clarity grading. With a crunched glass look, the vvs2 might be overkill on the radiant.

Good luck!

The respective three numbers do not indicate an overly fine cut. And the VVS is overkill... and this is what dragged the price high up (with little showing for it, I think). But the number is not out of line - this same stone could well be 10k elsewhere too but most likely not much cheaper. Such price variations are common though.

You might not believe in choosing diamonds by the numbers, but a fine cut would be sold at a premium.

There is no definitive standard for the radiant, but at least two circulate and reflect rather well the understanding of what the illusive 'fine cut' is. One such standard is the AGA's (LINK), the other belongs to the copany that introduced the rad as a branded cut (LINK).

Hope this helps...

Given the price point... it seems that somewhere there was a tradeoff between cut and clarity (as price factors) - so you are asked to do the same.

You do know how this looks, (not so myself) and might have inspected a dozen others, I hope. It is hard to judge one stone like this without reference (or without the piece at hand!).

On this forum, someone recently purchased a seriously charming radiant, if you might want to trach down her posts. The avatar name is "Nicrez".

Also... here's one pach of radiant 'numbers' that seem rather sweet (LINK).

I wish I had looked at other radiants and compared them side by side, but I was so overwhelmed with the whole e-ring shopping experience (my first time), and being totally diamond clueless...alas I did not.

It's been so long since I've seen the stone, I can hardly remember what it looks like. All I have to go by is a copy of the GIA report. My BF already put some $ down on it 4 wks ago. It is in the process of being mounted - should be done any day now. Is it too late? I'm hoping the jeweler will work with us... I really feel I need to compare it to other radiants with smaller tables and better overall proportions. It makes me sick to my stomach that we didn't spend more time researching and shopping before buying.

Thanks for weighing in. Wish me luck.

By the way, you're right - Nicrez's radiant is AMAZING. So seriously charming I can't stop looking at it!

In a not-so-deep stone with lots of table, I would expect more brilliance around the edges and less towards the mid of the stone (not sure how could this get into a picture, other than the respective Iscope - but it somewhat shows below). This might not be the most brilliant type on the planet, but how important this could be is entirely up to one's appreciation.
