Hello,

We just went in to check out our "future" rock but was quite disapointed.

Here are the stats:
-1.01 ct, H color, SI2
-''ideal cut''
-hearts and arrows
-Canadian diamond
-EGL graded
-price around $4500 US (we are in Canada--> ~$6000 CND)

1) Are we paying too much?
It seems that most jewellers in Canada are a lot more expensive vs US places.

2) The jeweller claims that the SI2 is eye clean. Do eye clean SI2''s exist?

3) Looking at the diamond (naked eye), we saw a ''bubble'' near the centre. Is this exceptable.

We did not accept the diamond and asked our jeweller to continue looking for our rock. Are our standards too high?

Thank you!

Mischa

Sorry about your rock. First, the EGL grading lab is not the best. The cut of the diamond is the most important factor to cause a diamond to sparkle. So read goodoldgold or nice ice cut tutorials first. In fact go to the bottom of the page and click on venders, I believe surperbcert is in Canada. You can check the many different parameters of a diamond. Read their tutorials first to understand all this. The SI-1 and SI-2 clarity grades are the most diverse. You can find SI-2 diamonds that are pretty clean and/or the inclusion is toward the edge and you can therefore hide the inclusion under a prong. The bubble you saw is just a crystal, and if it is clear it is better than the black inclusions which are far easier to spot and therefore more noticeable. Starting with an H color and SI-1 is a good place. I think(guess) for around 5,000 US, you should be able to find a beautiful diamond with tons of sparkle. I would pass up that diamond. Happy Hunting and buying from a online vender will give you the best bang for your buck.

Actually, Mischa, SuperbCert is based in New York City. However, USA Certed Diamonds is in Toronto, and they sell SuperbCerts. Their web site is USACerteddiamonds.com I bought a SuperbCert from them and Martin Sheffield was very helpful and knowledgeable. Others here have dealt with Tony there. They are a really good source of high quality diamonds at VERY reasonable prices. Give them a try.

There were quite a few Canadian buyers posting here, and at leats one of the resulting threads went to great detail on taxes and additional cross-border costs... One example can be found down THIS LINK

It really is little if any difference of size between 0.9cts and 1cts rounds - especially within those AGS0 proportions which limit depth. There are a couple of Harts and Arrows rounds G/H, AGS0 between 0.9 and 1 ct posted around here you may find attractive. Obviously there is a premium on either option - be it on cut or the Canadian origin of your stones. There is meaning to both - origin and cut. EGL aside, I do not know what cut quality standards apply to the Canadian stone you ave posted

Wether eye clean SI2 exists - most likely (it really depends on what each person thinks "eye clean" is!). If you don't like to see "activity" in your diamond, than higher clarity definitely seems feasible without much (if any) tradeoff in the respective price rang...

Just my 0.2, of course.

Thank you all very much for your help. I am not too keen about buying from an online vendor as taxes are ~25% (once it arrives in our hands); unless you cross the border and bring the rock over without declairing it (kind of risky isn't it?)

Thanks again for all your advice!

The hunting continues!...
