Getting Diamond Appraised??

Couple questions for you experts out there:

(1) If I'm buying a diamond from an online vendor, say GOG, should I still get it independently appraised? If so, should I forgo having it mounted on a temporary setting by the vendor and get it done locally once appraised?

(2) My GF is fairly picky and wants to choose her own setting once I seal the deal. Has anyone had any experience buying a setting from GOG, and sending the loose diamond back for them to set? Sounds like it's a lot of trouble.

GOG sends an appraisal with their diamonds but I would get it locally appraised so that you can get a jewelry insurance policy for your stone. I have had a great experience with insuring my jewelry through jewelers mutual. If your gf is picky than I definitely agree that you should propose with the stone and choose the setting together . It's not very difficult to ship a stone to be set . You should send it by certified mail which can take up to 14 days for delivery but it is quite safe.
Once you and your gf find a setting you like post a pic of it here and we can give you some feedback on the quality and value of the setting.
