Is there a trustworthy place in Philly that anyone would recommend getting a diamond engagment ring appraised at? I am concerned about diamond switching or other scams if i went to a smaller place. Any ideas? Also when i get it appraised i was going to ask for a SARIN and IdealScope to be done on it. Is this a reasonable request? How much would an appraisal like this run? Part of the reason i ask is to ensure i got a good value and also for an accurate appraisal to Jeweler''s Mutual.com . Thanks in advance for the help.

Hey Julie or anybody just to make sure.. can i do an idealscope on a diamond that is set? Also how much would it cost to do an appraisal with a sarin... and with an idealscope if possible?

Thanks in advance for the help

Clock,

Dave Atlas comes well recommended here, and you can see a recent mounted diamond, and ostensibly, Dave can help you both with that, and with a sarin, but to be prudent, I''d call ahead and ask for confirmation on assistance with both, just to make sure you his equipment is not on the fritz, or your being assigned to an appraiser in his office who routinely uses either. Note, though, that most appraisers are not, remotely, so well equipped, so you''re potentially very lucky to be local to him.

Idealscopes can be used no mounted stones. Sarin can not. Dave, and every appraiser in his office should be able to help you with both.

Neil,

checklist be created. In lieu of that, I just say, check in advance and tell them what you want...it helps set expectations for everybody.

P.S. (edited to add...) Neil, rereading the attached discussion from Kevinraja, I am reminded that you participated. Too bad we don't have a PM system anymore. Presumably, we are just all doing our best to help each other; that was my intention above, and I am sure that was yours, as well.

Ira,

I''m easy to reach by email. I agree that it''s entirely reasonable to contact your intended appraiser about what services you want and if, when, and at what price they can deliver them.

We can do Sarin scans and Ideal scope inspection, no problem. Call us on 215-922-1926 and ask for either Chris or Mike. You can email [email protected] as well.

If we can''t do what you need, or if there is some conflict of interest, we will send you to another qualified appraiser locally. No problem.

Dave, is Mike the same as Michael Jordan, for whom kevinraja quotes in the attached thread: "He commented that IS is good, but he doesn''t believe in it?"

Just wanted to add: we had an awesome experience with Chris at D. Atlas (Gem Appraisers) in Philly. He was incredibly helpful and accomodating in all our questions about our internet stone, even when I came back multiple times to check it out with my fiance, friend, etc.

Couldn''t recommend them more highly!

Mike Jordan has worked for me for about 30 years. He is not the basketaball star, unfortunately.

He may have his own opinion on the Ideal-Scope. He knows how I feel about it. We find it a useful tool. We don''t need it a lot in our work since experience lets us detect a well cut diamond without much in the way of any extra device. However, I think the IS is very useful for consumers and that''s why we offer it to them. The ones on my appraiser''s desks don''t get used a whole lot since a great deal of our diamond grading involves fancy shapes. Since AGA is the home of fancy shape cut grading, we get far more fancy shapes than rounds for our services.

Hope this makes sense to you.
