Getting a stone GIA certified that you already own?

Ok so I was just on their site, it's really only $121? It seems so inexpensive - is there something I'm missing here?

Well, there's shipping and insurance if you don't happen to live in sunny Carlsbad or NYC.

I live in Long Island, so can I drop it to their NYC location? Yes, for the big deal everyone makes about a Gia cert, I assumed it would be an expensive endeavor.

No, you have it right. Laser inscription is extra.

You need to get the stone to GIA, either walking it in in person or (more typically) having a trusted jeweler or trade member send it in for you (thus handling transportation & insurance). I recently had a stone I own re-certified and it was just as shown on the website. I went through a local jeweler I know well who charged me a modest additional fee to cover shipping (which we agreed to upfront).

Great- well good to know- thanks! GOG has it on consignment as the whole ring but they have said I can also sell stone separately if complete ring doesn't sell but it seems worth it to have it GIA certified if I go that route. Thanks for the input folks.

I also live on Long Island and I have a pair of diamond studs that I plan on having certed when I re-set them. I'm going to just drop them off in person.

Lately one of the biggest downsides is time- GIA has been taking about 6 weeks to complete a report.
If you pay double they get it done in a day...

I will def post about my experience once I do it, it'll be awhile though before I save up enough for the re-set I want.

I dropped three stones in December and GIA finished grading all of them in a week.
