hi,

if any of you guys have gotten your diamond set or reset in a setting, who do you have do it? if you do it at a jeweler who you did not buy the diamond or setting from, is there or is there supposed to be any kind of assurance that they will not damage the diamond?

i talked to one local store who said i take on that risk. so then i called an insurance company to see if i could insure my ring and they said the jeweler is supposed to have their own insurance to protect against this and they cant insure against setting if it is a loose diamond.

does anyone have experience with this?

i bought my diamond on Bluenile and they wont set it unless it is in one of their settings and their selection is not the best.

i suppose i could buy another setting from a different online vendor and have it set by them if they would assure that nothing would happen to the diamond..

maybe i should just keep calling jewelers to see if any do assure that the diamond will not be damaged.

please let me know your thoughts :) thanks.

I bought my diamond from GOG and had it set by a local jeweler. However, I did check with one other local jeweler and they refused to take responsibility for any damage to the diamond if they set it. The jeweler I went with has a really great reputation in our city and they were willing to take the risk.

I would keep checking around. There is bound to be a reputable jeweler who would cover any damage that may occur. Good luck!

Froufrou, I wouldn''t be worried about handlers damaging the stone as it is a rare case.

In the case it does indeed happen, they will inform you and they will not be held liable (nor will they insure you). Only Bluenile is liable to insuring you in the case they damage your diamond.

I am actually in the same boat as you - I ordered a diamond ring from Bluenile but was not pleased with the setting so had them unset the diamond, refund my money for the setting, and ship the loose stone back to me. Then, I shipped my diamond to another online vendor (primarily because I wanted a Tiffany replica classic setting and apparently I can only find online vendors who have them). I used WhiteFlash because they''re extremely knowledgeable in diamonds and they offer extensive security features (i.e. closed-circuit monitoring of all work being done on the diamond).

Regardless of whether you choose to have your diamond set from a B&M store or an online vendor, there''s always the risk of them damaging the diamond but I wouldn''t be too fraught over the thought especially when you are in dire need of a setting (besides Bluenile''s limited selection).

keep checking around.

squack: does the tiff. replica on whiteflash have a head that looks like the tiffanys? i couldn''t see a side view on their website. if you don''t mind my asking...how much is WF charging you to set the stone since youve bought their setting, and how much did it end up costing to send the stone to WF with shipping insurance?

i live near chicago and i think the only online jeweler who has a home base near me would be dimend scaasi. their settings are expensive but i might see what their price is for setting it, if i can find people on here who can say they are reputable (they seem to be?)... then i wouldnt have to worry about shipping it, but i dunno.

ditto, some will, some won''t. you''ll just have to keep calling around until you find someone who will. I''d probably have the person you are buying your new setting from set it though.

i will if i buy a new setting. i am considering it. mine is really plain and i am not too fond of it. i was looking to get a tiffany replica one but it is only a tiffany style one so if i can find a tiffany replica one it would definately be the best thing. i was thinking if the person i buy a setting from is very reputable and wont charge too much for the setting of the diamond, i will be able to justify buying another setting!!! :) i also want one which is white gold mixed with palladium or whatever that doesn''t have to be replated, ive heard about that somewhere but i wouldnt know where to look.

Froufrou, I am buying the Tiffany replica from WhiteFlash for $975.00 and they have a setting fee of $75 for a total of $1050.

The interesting thing is that I *just* checked the price on WhiteFlash and now they are charging $1170 instead of $975! My setting is the C version (to hold carat size of 1.5-1.99).

WhiteFlash's Tiffany setting can be found here: http://www.whiteflash.com/Engagement-Rings/Styles/Solitaire/Tiffany-Knife-Edge_792.htm

Here is a picture of what it looks like:

The only way to send the stone to WhiteFlash (or any online vendor for that matter) is through registered mail through the USPS. I believe I paid around $22-$25 to ship it via registered Priority Mail. Note that when sending registered mail you have to use paper mailing tape (provided for free by the USPS) and you have to tape all edges of the box. The price of shipping may differ for you depending on how much you declare the value of your package to be I believe $22-25 for shipping a diamond valued at $10,000 sounds about right. Registered mail comes insured and it also includes a tracking number.

Hope this helps!

thanks a lot, sqwacks, thats very helpful. that setting looks more bulky than the tiffany one on the website, I wonder if it has more width? does Whiteflash give you some assurance that the diamond would not be damaged??

the one that is in WG says it is 2.7 mm width, it actually appears thinner than the platinum one. ohh but i just saw the prongs on that one and it is not the same as the platinum one at all. weird..

the one you are looking at is the normal 6-Prong "Tiffany" Style setting. The one sqwacks showed is the knife-edge setting. They are different settings. I don''t think WF has the knife-edge in WG.
