There is a diamond on consignment sale at my local jeweler that I'm interested in. Specs are 1.32 RB, G/H color, SI2. Price is $5995. It appears eye clean from the top, an inclusion is noted from the side but it's not overly bothering considering the setting I'm looking at. Not sure if GIA/AGA, didn't get that far in depth yet. Thoughts?
 
What in the world is G/H? Either it is graded a G or it is graded an H. Split grades indicate a lab you don't want to deal with.
 
I was thinking the same thing which makes me say it's not certified. :shock:
 
Agreed.

And try using the Pricescope diamond search function on the home page.
It will give you an idea of what the market price of diamonds in those parameters.

Also, the grading lab/report matters so you may want to inquire about that first.
Differences in colour and clarity grades have noticeable impact on price.
 
I can find a 1.2-1.25 RB on Blue Nile G-H, SI1-2 for about the price of $6000. Jeweler said the woman selling the stone had an offer of $5500 about 4 months ago which she declined. I'm tempted to offer full price if she will have it sent out for certification and it comes back with the noted specs.

Why bother if you can buy the same stone with the same specs for the same price at Blue Nile?

I would see if they would send it to GIA or AGS for certification before you buy it. I did a search for similar stones on James Allen (with wide color parameters because G/H is so vague) but SI1-SI2 clarity and most are coming back in the $4,000-$5,000 range. A price of $6,000 is really not that great for this, plus you know nothing about the cut.

Also, how is James Allen for settings? My jeweler can recreate one of their settings and band for me but for over $800 more than JA. I'm having a hard time trusting the online and not physically seeing it.

Which JA setting do you like? Scroll down on the setting's page for real life photos of it. And know that JA has a return policy, so if you don't love it in real life, you have time to return.
 
What's the return policy?
You could have them send it to an independent appraiser (listed under resources menu tab)

This is the setting I am looking at but in 14k yellow gold with a white gold head. JA will only modify a setting if I purchase a center stone through them. And then the $150ish modification fee is non-refundable (not a huge deal).

The stone I was looking at through them is now out of the inventory. I'd like something at least 7mm as that is the size of my current stone and I don't want a bigger ct weight to look smaller. I currently have a 1.09 RB, G I1 stone that faces up at 7mm. The inclusion is right on the table and it bothers me a lot. I'm not necessarily looking to go bigger than my current but just something eye clean.

The jeweler has a vested interest in moving that stone, and another drawback of going to jeweler appraisers is that they also can dissuade a potential client by intentionally putting the diamond in a bad light to get you to return that stone and buy from them instead. You should always seek out an independent appraiser who's business is appraising alone, not selling jewelry.
