The adrenaline is subsiding. I just won an auction for an alexandrite necklace that looks pretty to me. It has a GIA report, but I want to send it in for an AGL origin. Is there any point in doing that? The stones are small, but the color change looks strong, and I love the soft green color. I know I should have check in here first, because I’ve never bought an Alex before, and have only seen lab ones in person, but it was an auction and I thought $2100 was an ok price considering there was a cert for the largest stone.

Thanks for the feedback. 2B916E72-401B-4176-AF0F-E80F1120A261.jpeg

That's lovely... I think you did very well! I would probably want all of the stones tested, but, then again, I'm quite neurotic about that. Congrats and enjoy!!

Great find! I’d say AGL origin report if 1) you’re just curious, 2) you’d want to re-sell.

I take it you haven’t seen it IRL yet? I hope you love it!

Me too. Only AGL has a size limit and I think only the larger stone will qualify.
Thank you for the kind, supportive words!

Well done.
Very pretty too.
I wouldn't bother spending the extra $$ to have each other gemstone tested.
And as for origin, I think that’s more expensive and they only do unmounted gems?
With Alex sometimes they can’t / don’t give you an origin due to a lack of inclusions that are specific to a locality.

Good to know. I’ve had some stones that AGL could tell me about, without unmounting. Only 1 ring they couldn’t.

Thank you for your comment. You have inspired me with your finds!

Oh boy. The necklace arrived today. The green absolutely pops, and is more vivid than the original photos. That is not what my photos show, but will share anyway. It’s a grey rainy day here. Hoping I can see some color change tonight…am going to light candles. 416BE630-67C2-4AB1-9D35-F39BA9B66B12.jpeg

Nice.

If it has a GIA report on the Alex, I would not spend extra money for a AGL origin. With Alex its all about the color change, origin really does not affect the price, unless its old Russian material and then I'm not really sure how much and it is very doubtful Russian. Looks like Orissa, India stones. Maybe Brazil.

I am curious about the origin and the percentage of color change. Spoke to AGL today, and Maria told me that they do not agree with every Alex ID from GIA. Who knows about that, but origin and % are enough to make me send it in. Hope it comes back before Xmas! Seems a very festive stone.

I'm sure they did. Their in the business of selling reports. Alex is very easy to identify for any major lab.

Enjoy your necklace.

Got the AGL report back today. The origin is India (Orissa). Degree of color change is moderate (50-60%) and the quality is good. Color is Green to Grayish purple, vs green to purple for GIA.

For my purposes, which is to educate myself and to verify what vendors have stated, I am satisfied.

No point getting an origin report because it makes very little difference to the price. The price depends on cut, clarity and more importantly the strength of colour change seen. I would however get all stones checked.

Looking forward to seeing more pics and neck shots! Will you keep them as set now or put them in a different mounting?

The silly thing broke, just split apart. My jeweler is fixing a wire along the back now. I do like it as a necklace, but would enjoy seeing it more, so am considering a bracelet. I will post more pics when I have it back.
