What are the problems with buying an uncertified stone?? Is it OK to do so?
They could send it to GIA they said, but how much is that?

Thank you!!!

Re: Found a Diamond I liked, BUT it's NOT Certified! What do

It depends on the size. But you're looking at $100 for a 1 carat plus shipping plus insurance both ways. You can go on GIA's website to find the actual charges.

Another option is having the sale contingent on having it checked out by an appraiser that you choose.

To get any relevant advice you'll beed to be more specific.
What size, color clarity and price is the diamond?

Re: Found a Diamond I liked, BUT it's NOT Certified! What do

It's 1.36 H color, "Transitional" round and not sure of clarity! I didn't even look! shame on me
$6300

I always wanted a d, e or f, and this faced up white. What should i do? Do i write up a stipulation that if GIA comes back defective or something for refund? I think they have refund.

So it is an old cut stone? Those are not typically sent to GIA because that lab reallyl faults their cut, because GIA is based on modern RBs for cut quality. I think you should consider sending it to a reputable independrnt appraiser who can give you an assessment.

No Shame!!
Why would you even think to include that stuff, you're not in the business!

Dreamer brings up a good point- many such stones are offered sans GIA - so that's more "acceptable" with an old stone.
My feeling about apprasials is different- I prefer to have the GIA report even if it's not common on old stones.
An appraisal is not worth all that much if you ever decide to sell- the GIA report will be a very good thing to have.

Why don't you ask the seller if they'd be willing to send the stone for a GIA report- maybe offer some sort of deposit( if you're comfortable with them- make sure you can back out of the GIA is not to your liking)

Yep, if you're shopping for an antique cut, you probably will find EGL USA certs at the very best. Most are uncerted.

Basically, make sure it has a return period, and take it to an independant appraiser who is familiar with antique cuts.

Re: Found a Diamond I liked, BUT it's NOT Certified! What do

I would send it to a lab like GIA or AGS and have them grade it. Then determine if the price is still right.

Re: Found a Diamond I liked, BUT it's NOT Certified! What do

thanks!!!!! Is $6300 a good price for an uncert. stone? H color, trans round? 1.33 ct?

What if GIA would grade that "H" an I, J, or K or worse? ;(
Would it still be a good deal then?

Without a grading report you do not know the grades.
Do not trust the seller's opinion on the grades.
He/she has a conflict of interest.

Get it sent to GIA or AGS so you can believe the grades.
Only then should you ask if it is a good price because you'll know what it is.

Re: Found a Diamond I liked, BUT it's NOT Certified! What do

it looked pretty white. i was shocked it was an h color. i guess you're right though. i better play it safe

Re: Found a Diamond I liked, BUT it's NOT Certified! What do

The difference between an H and an F is a HUGE deal and it highights the importance of good grading in the diamond business. If you're going to rely on an outside grader, it's terribly important to understand in whom you're placing your trust. This is true even if you are an expert yourself. For conservative people in the US, both dealers and the public, there are only two generally accepted choices, GIA and AGS. ALL others are suspect. 'Transitional' cuts are actually a problem here and I understand why the dealer is shying away from it. If the lab calls it a round brilliant because of the facet pattern, which they might, then it's likely to score fairly poorly on the cut grading scales and getting assigned a cut grade of 'poor' or even 'fair' is a commercial disaster. This isn't really a fair metric for an antique stone but there is a boundary area for what is a 'modern' stone and you may be near it. For this reason I see a lot of these sorts of stones with EGLUSA pedigree, because they don't give it a cut grade at all.

Thank you all so much for your SUPER helpful responses! :wavey: I decided since the jewelry store is a very reputable one in an affluent area and they have been in business and maintain their exc reputation for over 50 years; I will get paperwork if I buy it and forgo the GIA cert. in this case. :naughty: I am just curious what color it is. I know it's H SI1 (as per the 2 gemologists there). It looks pretty white to me. I love it.

"No shame!" ??

I usually enjoy you posts but I don't know what you meant by telling the OP this.

Re: Found a Diamond I liked, BUT it's NOT Certified! What do

I think he meant "No shame" like "Oh don't worry about it!" or at least that's how I took it.

:)

I'm curious how this turned out, iluvdiamonds2, did you send it in for grading?

I'm lusting over an uncert'd stone as well, does it take very long to get them back after being sent in for grading?

if you love it that is the most important thing but it might be worth getting an independent appraisal from an appraiser who is familiar with antiques. you mention that the gemologists at the store told you it was H SI1, but they are working for the store and not for you!
