So, I was pretty sure I wanted a x-prong setting, but the more I see, the more I fall in love with the six-prong solitaire (like this).

I love the x-prong because it sits low and can be customized to sit flush with a wedding band.

I love the solitaire because the thinner band really makes the diamond POP (and no, I don''t like the 4-prong nearly as much).

Can a 6-prong be made to sit flush with a wedding band, without having a curved or notched band? Can it be made to sit low and flush with a wedding band?

If not, can the x-prong be made to have a thin (like, 2mm) band? Or does this not work with the intrinsic design?

See any potential design flaws with what I am proposing? I know a good goldsmith can DO most anything I like--but will it be 1)attractive and 2)safe? (Bearing in mind I will most likely be setting ~1/3 ct stone.)

Opinions appreciated!

I am not sure by what you mean by "flush" setting, but since I have spent the past 3 months searching, finding, and purchasing an engagement ring for a surprise proposal in December, let me give you my quick opinion........

thinking about how much money you just spent on a stone, do you really want to cover it up with all those prongs?
I loved the setting I picked out and it came with a six prong head. I really like them. But then I saw almost the same setting w/ a stone in it and a four prong head, and changed my mind. You see a lot more stone which means at least a little more *bling*.

just something to think about.

Mmmm, yes, but well-made prongs wouldn't overpower the stone, and actually because of the size of the stone I'm considering, I think would lend a little "visual weight" to the diameter--I think it would actually improve the appearance (vs. 4-prong, which would square it off).

Hmm, I'll have to take a look @1/3c w/6-prongs and see how I like it in person. Thx!
