I recently got this stone from Bluenile it is 2 ct J VS2, The GIA report says no Fluorosence but I took it to an appraiser and found out that the stone indeed glows blue. I do not know the difference between a faint glow or a medium glow but I know the stone glowed and she confirmed that the stone has fluoro though the GIA report says none. When asked GIA being the world wide body how can they go wrong? she said GIA is making a lot of mistakes lately and AGS is a better standard. I had another AGS diamond in my posession and that diamond did not glow confirming with the report.

Have any of you faced a problem like this before, and what can you make of this?

Send it back to BN, and inform them that it needs to be regraded?

AGS will not state that any diamond has "no fluor".

So you took the Blue Nile diamond to an appraiser yet the appraiser was unable to tell you if the fluor was faint, medium, strong, or strong blue??? Sounds like you need a new appraiser.....I don''t know any good appraisers that are unable to differentiate the different levels of fluor in a stone.

AGS reports will say "Negligible" on a stone that seemingly has no fluor.....it is just their thing.

Did the appraiser verify that everything else on the report matched the stone? Was the plot right? Was it laser inscribed? Cindy

Ditto. Weird for GIA not to catch something like that.

Hi fchida

Was this an actual independant appraiser, or someone who sells jewellery?

Kristie,
The appraiser said it was faint. She had a hand held device that shoots UV rays and she made the stone glow. I took it to an another appraiser and he made it glow too and agreed that it has faint fluor. Weird GIA did not catch it. Thanks

Hi Cindy,
Everything on the report matched perfectly. Thanks

She is an independent appraiser. Both the appraisers are Master Certified Gemologists.

Does this really make any difference with the diamond (other than maybe you would be entitled to a refund of some sort)? I just purchased a stone with strong fluoro and my research on this site indicates that it''s not really considered a "bad" thing....many actually prefer it.

In this case there will probably be no change in selling price, as it is a J color, usually only the more colorless grade are discounted by trade. Just that fluor is such an easily detected characteristic, we are wondering if it is the same stone or a mistake was make and a different stone was sent.

Ah, OK! Fair enough. My stone is a "G", so it might have been affected more, but it''s a beautiful rock, so I''m not complaining.

In this case, the whole thing sorta makes me question the GIA standard. I was considering having my stone sent in to either GIA or AGS to have them certify it (in addition to the less coveted IGI cert it already has). This would make me lean toward AGS. Only problem is, unlike GIA, I haven''t found instructions on how to submit a stone to them.

I emailed them earlier, but nothing yet.

AGS will only accept it from trade not from public, so you will need to get a jeweler or appraiser to send it in for you.
