Fluorescence Question

I have been searching recently for a .75-.90ct round brilliant ideal in the F, G, H color range. I'm eyeing a .82ct GIA XXX stone that is of I color but has medium blue fluorescence. Given that the I is towards the bottom end of the near colorless range, could the fluorescence actually be desirable and help mask any yellow tint in certain lighting situations? I've read some conflicting advice on this, but I also realize the right answer is probably "personal preference." I would still appreciate any advice on this.

Personally I love fluorescence. Medium blue is just that - medium. It may help the color a bit, but won't be strong enough to have any detrimental effect on the stone (milkiness / oiliness). If you like the stone I'd ask the vendor (is it a PS vendor?), but keep in mind *most* B&M stores have a negative opinion of any fluorescence.

Unfortunately it's not a PS vendor, which I would prefer because they typically have much more data available (idealscope, H&A images, etc). This one actually is a Blue Nile signature ideal, and I at least have the GIA report. I'm not opposed to BN, but the data is more limited. Price seems really competitive compared to other stones with the same specs.

What's your budget? We can help you look.

Thanks! Budget is up to $4000. Prefer something between .8 & .9ct. This one in particular is .82 and a little under $3400. I've found a few on WF and GOG as well that have very similar specs and are similarly priced. Honestly, I'm probably splitting hairs at this point and just need to pull the trigger! They've all got 30 day guarantees. :)

That said, I'd appreciate any help!

Yes, fluorescence does help lower color diamonds appear slightly whiter under light sources that contain UV light. Sunlight has UV, but only a few indoor lighting have UV. So no help if your diamond is viewed indoors most of the time. Medium is medium, very strong blue would be more helpful. And even then a very stong blue I color is going to appear closer to a H color at best. It really does not change much, a small change is better than no change in appearance. Plus they used to discount diamonds with very strong blue fluorescence in higher colors and small discounts in lower colors. But today lots of people seek these diamonds out. I believe one vendor (Brian Gavin) sells nothing but diamonds with fluorescence in his Blue line. I would look at his web site if you are interested. Happy Hunting!!!

I agree - go with the best cut one in your price range with the vendors who have 30 day guarantees, upgrade policies, etc. I personally love fluorescence and am disappointed my current stone doesn't have any. ;)

You're very welcome! I just went through the same process and know what it's like! :) Glad to share. The ring is beautiful and I'm sure the diamond you choose will be fantastic! Can't wait to see hand pics!

BTw - don't wait too long to get the stone, many lurkers here snap up stones recommended! :)

I actually read this just after I finally placed the order! Had it narrowed down to 4, 1 each from GOG, Blue Nile, WF, and James Allen. I literally was splitting hairs. In the end, I took the chance on the Sig Ideal 0.82ct from BN with the GIA triple X. Scored well on the HCA also (0.9). Deciding factor was that I could get 5pts/dollar from my credit card, which trumps the 1.5% and 3% wire transfer discounts.

Oh well, here's a link to the stone with the GIA report. Guess a thorough personal review, appraisal, and insurance are up next.

I think that you made a beautiful choice. Now remember the most important rule of pricescope You must post many many pics!!!

Was Blue Nile able to confirm for you that the stone is eyeclean from the top (and sides if they can be seen with the setting)?

I strongly prefer fluorescence in I color and lower. A friend I met on here bought an I color withe MBF and I could not tell it apart from an H stone that they showed us! So that part is great!

I spoke to 2 reps at BN. Both claimed that in order for a diamond to be labeled as a 'signature ideal', it must be eye clean. Of course, I failed to ask what their definition of eye clean is. This is the major thing I'm worried about in buying a stone sight unseen. Hopefully my evaluation process will reveal no surprises! I'll get some pics of it this week once I have it in hand.
