Hi everyone,
Looking at buying an engagement ring. I've got the ring picked out, just struggling in pulling the trigger when getting the diamond.
I don't want to spend much more that$1300 on the stone.

Below is one of the stones I have researched. Are these specs good for my price range?

Carat Weight: 0.50
Cut: Excellent
Color: D
Clarity: VVS2
Price($US): 1181.24
Lab Name: GIA
Depth: 71.90 Table: 74.00
Polish: Very Good
Symmetry: Very Good
Girdle: TN-STK
Culet: None
Fluorescence: Medium
Ratio: 1.04
Measurements: 4.56x4.39x3.16

$1300 may not be much to some, it is all I can afford. I just want to know I won't be buying a peice of crap.

Cheers,

Funky

No.

You are wasting money on color and clarity you do not need. Go down to F/G VS2 easily eyeclean.

And there are no specs for princess cut. You need to shop at a vendor with an ASET scope image available. And one that has an AGS0 princesses if you can swing that.

This is a nice choice. http://www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/princess-cut/0.57-carat-f-color-vs1-clarity-sku-172771

And you can ask for an ASET image from James Allen. They have 60 days full refunds return policy.

Here's what an ASET is and how to read one: http://www.highperformancediamonds.com/index.php?page=education-performance

Wow, glad I didn't pull the trigger then!

I thought colour and clarity were important?

Sorry, should mention she only wants a 0.50 carat.

You don't buy princesses by carat weight. You buy them by dimensions. the .57 is 4.53*4.37*3.22 and that's right where you want to be with princesses around 1/2 carat.

Clarity only matters if you are talking visible inclusions and safety. And ALL VS1 and above are perfectly clean and perfectly safe. You can't tell a VS1 from an IF unaided. And I have a VS1 and even with a loop I can't find my inclusions. Most of the time we recommend eyeclean SI stones. So trust me you are OVER safe with VS1.

Color matters only in terms of whiteness. F and G are perfectly white. You do NOT need D, or even E. H is where you might start seeing tint with a princesses. So again you are OVER safe with an F.

LIGHT RETURN and cut are what matter most. A poorly cut E will look darker than a G with ideal light return. NOTHING affects a diamonds performance as might as cut and light return. That is the most important thing.

Put the F on hold. Ask for an ASET. They will ask you for 3. Just say no, you only want one.

Here's a gorgeous option:
http://www.whiteflash.com/loose-diamonds/princess-cut-loose-diamond-3025634.htm Almost exactly 50 points. 4.39x4.30x3.16 The ASET is posted and shows perfect performance. Which makes sense as it is an AGS0.

Actually forget the James Allen stone. This is the one I would buy. It's going to be gorgeous.

Whiteflash also has gorgeous settings. What is your setting budget and what style does she want?

Thank you for your replies! Much appreciated.

This is the setting she is after (Classic Cathedral Prong Set Diamond Engagement Ring in 14K White Gold (1/3 cttw.)

Want to spend approx $2100-$2200 US on (setting +diamond) as once I import to Australia it will end up costing around $2500.

Are there any diamonds from b2c you would recommend? Because i'd like to get the setting and diamond together. (Couldn't find the same setting on white flash)

OK. Well. No I didn't see much on B2C.
http://www.b2cjewels.com/dd-4360707-0.60-carat-Princess-diamond-E-color-VVS1-clarity.aspx This is the only one and it's its over budget. If you can see if they have a Pricescope discount (I think they do) it might help with the cost. Again a 60 point stone is REALLY not that much larger AT ALL than a 50 point. So don't worry about it being too big. $1,606.46

Ask if the Strong blue makes the stone Hazy. There is a slight chance it does, in which case you would disregard it. But mostly likely it will not, and will be fine.

You setting is 740. Together they are just over 2300. Ask for the Pricescope discount which will help. And you can do one stop shopping, which will be best, you are right.

I don't think anything about it. That's a sample image. The stone could be nice, it could be terrible. There's no way to know. You don't need VVS clarity. Shop at a vendor with images and ASETs of their stones.
