Hello you guys! First post here, been a lurker for a long time and I've learned soooo much from all your post. I recently bought my engagement ring with my bf. A beautiful 7.5mm oval yellow sapphire with a double halo with a total of .25ct diamonds. My ring size is a 3.5 so we obviously have to size it down from the standard size 7. My fear was that we wouldn't be able to re-size, but now I have a bigger problem.
We went to Jared to have it re-sized and they said they couldn't do it because the diamonds were indeed moissanite  I'm very disappointed given that we bought it from a place that seemed to have a good reputation with diamond jewelry (Costco).
So what do I do? Where can I get it appraised? Could it be that they just didn't want to re-size it? I mean the ring can with its own appraisal, but it was from Costco themselves.

Can you bring your ring to an independent 3rd party to verify the stones in the halo? Moissanite should be easy to tell apart from a diamond by looking for the double refraction. That said, Jared might have their own agenda because they also sell jewellery and thus, are in competition with Costco. Secondly, I don't put any stock in appraisals that are created by the seller because there is a conflict of interest and are usually over-inflated. A true appraisal should come from a qualified independent source.

I should be able to take it to a third party. I've never gotten any jewelry appraised. How much would it cost an dhow does the process go about?

Does the shank of the ring have stones on it? That is a huge amount to size down. Only take it to a very reputable jeweler that has an in-house bench so they can tell you reliably whether the ring should be sized down that much. I would not take a ring to a chain jeweler like Jared to size or to do any repairs at all.

No the shank doesn't have any stones, that's one of the reason why we got it.

Can u take it to Costco to see what they say?

All is good in my ring world :)) I took it to a wonderful certified gemologist appraiser. He looked at it and said that they were diamonds. Loved the jewelers so much that we decided to get my ring re-sized there. If these ordeal had not happened I would've never discovered that hidden gem in my own city. Now I'm just furious with Jared :angryfire: Either way they lost my business for good.

Jared is not to be relied on. First, they are frequently staffed by idiots. Second, none of their bench people are on-site. Third, Costco wouldn't damage their multi- BILLION dollar rep over 1000 worth of diamonds and sapphires.

Always consider the source. Costco has one of the best return polices in the world. If you don't alter it (including sizing) they will take it back even YEARS after you bought it and give you a FULL refund.

You have no worries with them.

That's what made me second guess Jared. I mean I don't think people realize that Costco sells thousands of carats each year, so why would they want to risk a lawsuit? I still don't understand why they wouldn't re-size it. If they didn't feel capable of doing it, they should have just said so instead of giving false information.

They were A) idiots using a mis-calibrated tool or B) hoping you'd rush over and return it and then come back and give them your business. Either way, you learned your lesson. Post a review on Yelp, and enjoy your new jeweler.

Will definitely post a review. Now all that is left to do is see the finish result! Can't wait :P
