Hi,

I''ve been looking at a few colored stones online where vendors say that they have great fire. Does fire in a colored stone mean that there is a return of, say, red flashes in a ruby as opposed to the rainbows of a diamond?

Thanks!

It depends on the context the word is used and the gem species. For example the fire of a dispersive gem, like diamond, demantoid, sphene, typically means the rainbow of flashes that come from the bending of light in the stone. The "fire" of a flame spinel probably means the glow of red in the stone, and the "fire" of an opal probably means the play of color that they''re typically used for.
