Hi,

I''ve been looking at a few colored stones online where vendors say that they have great fire. Does fire in a colored stone mean that there is a return of, say, red flashes in a ruby as opposed to the rainbows of a diamond?

Thanks!

No..

Definitely two different concepts and two different attributes.

So, what does fire mean in the colored gem world?

It depends on the context the word is used and the gem species. For example the fire of a dispersive gem, like diamond, demantoid, sphene, typically means the rainbow of flashes that come from the bending of light in the stone. The "fire" of a flame spinel probably means the glow of red in the stone, and the "fire" of an opal probably means the play of color that they''re typically used for.

Thanks TL!

IIRC benitoite has the type of fire you''re talking about... if I understand what you''re talking about lol
