I've never worn a piece of jewelry in my life, so I think it's safe to say that I knew nothing at all when I started looking for an engagement ring about a month ago. Reading through this site has made me feel so much more comfortable with picking out the big purchase. I've been reading so many different threads dating back months ago to see what other guys in my position were posting, and the advice that they were getting. The main reason for my post is to thank all of you for taking the time to answer questions and help diamond illiterates like myself make such a big decision.

I finally pulled the trigger on Wednesday, buying a diamond and setting from James Allen. Being understandably nervous about buying online, I went to JA's office in New York and looked at a few diamonds that interested me in order to settle my fears. I settled on the following diamond, and I wanted to see what everyone here thought.

For price I was trying to stay below $6k and size is of more importance than having the greatest diamond on paper according to the future mrs. I asked for an ASET, but it would cause delivery to be delayed a bit too close to proposal day so I decided to forgo considering I had already seen the diamond.

Let me know how you think I did! Thanks!!!

it's beautiful! I love thing pave shanks! I think they are so delicate and classy and timeless---- not to mention they really "dress up" the traditional solitaire look.

I also think that the stone looks lovely! Well done! The future mrs. will surely love it

I have to say that is going to be a LOVELY ring. Very delicate and sparkly. Can not wait to see hand shots.

It looks like a lovely diamond and will be stunning in that pretty setting.

ETA: Hi and Welcome :wavey: ,

JA are great, how lucky are you to have been to visit them. I would love to go. I hope you love the final product and for me, a pave setting will be sure to catch her eye. Is it a surprise?

I just wanted to bring up something that has been making me a bit nervous since I made the purchase to see what everyone thought. The HCA tool brought up a 0.9 for the diamond. From what I can tell, it looks like most people on the boards are looking for a score between 1.5 and 2. Should the extremely low 0.9 be a cause for concern? I saw the stone in person and thought it looked good, but like I said, I really don't know anything about jewelry.

I also noticed the GIA is from Sept 2009, is that a cause for concern as well? Any input is appreciated, thanks!

Bump. That can't be a good sign.

It is fine.

The HCA is for blunt weeding only - do not try to misuse it as a selection tool, as you will be relying on misinformation.

The HCA uses four inputs (that, if from a GIA report, are averaged and then rounded) to determine whether a stone *may* be worth investigating further - it is by no means a precision tool :)) so in short, don't worry about the HCA at this point in the game. The picture, while not the best judge, shows no obstruction - an IS would confirm. If you like the diamond when you see it, well - your eyes are the best judge of all...
