Thanks to all the education and information from the forum and all of you, I finally was confidant enough to make my first loose diamond purchase which will be set inside a beautiful coast engagement ring. I started the search at many local B&M stores where the quality and size of ring I wanted was out of my budget including all factors like tax and "free latte''s" (someone has to pay for it, right).
While at the stores I did talk to the sales people I was dealing with and asked them about buying a diamond on-line. Of course I knew what the answer was going to be, and I got it. At one of the places, their top gemologist wrote down a comparison of buying online vs their store. While many things he wrote down about online buying could be valid, I found that buy going with one of recommended vendors on this site would nullify all of it. Once again I did not feel the need to pay for a higher cost diamond to absorb the cost of their "free services" such as proposal ambassadors and concierge services.

Armed with the prices from local stores, I went used PS to look for some diamonds that fit my criteria, and what do you know, the prices were significantly less. I found two stones that were perfect for me from different vendors. They were exactly the same except one was a vs1 (about $150 more) and the other was a vs2.
I went with the vs1 from WF and I worked with Bob H. He was very helpful and we even compared his diamond to the other one. He told me that from what he could tell without seeing the other diamond, it was also of great quality and that I should be happy with either one. It is great when you can deal with someone with integrity and is not just trying to make the sale.
