...sigh...

Karen. I''m going to miss you. I do hope you come back.

If we want to keep these threads going, all we have to do is CHILL out and stop giving snarky remarks any attention. And well, stop being a snark (guilty
35.gif
).
1. Think before you post
2. Ask yourself if what you consider "witty" may be offensive to someone else
3. Stick to the topics at hand
4. Don''t think everyone who disagrees with you is out to get you
5. Avoid phrases such as "Oh please!" and scoffing at others opinions
6. Learn to let it go
7. Take a break if you start to get heated
8. Own up to your own attitude and posts.
9. Be respectful to other members, who are all from different walks of life and are entitled to their opinions
10. Remember that there are way more lurkers than there are posters

I''m not a mod, but those are the 10 commandments of Around the World that I intend to follow should the forum stay open.

This is a very important election, and it is obvious that after the last 8 years we all have very strong viewpoints and we aren''t always going to agree. I''m sick of Ali having to come here to remind us to play nice. Anyone else? We''re grown adults. Let''s start acting like it...that will show more class than always having to be "right" or get the last word.

Moving on.........
So glad the playing field is starting to even out. The McCain/Palin ticket is hot right now and I hope the Republican party will continue to get the platform that it deserves. Of course, we''ll have to wait and see, as the conventions have only just ended. The debates are going to the true test. I predict Biden will win the VP debate and McCain will win the Presidential debates, especially on foreign policy. I heard that Obama even wants to take Palin on in a game of 1 on 1! Of course, he means on the basketball court. I don''t think he''d win that battle though. They called her Sarah Barracuda for a reason!

''It would be nice to get the hell away from America'' ??????

Maybe you and Michelle Obama can find a cozy little socialist enclave somewhere where you two can be free of the country neither of you can be proud of.

And we can be free of you.

I know that it is very difficult for opposing sides not to come into this thread and ''defend'' their position.

I stuck around PS because I truly believed it to be a supportive environment in the spirit of ''INforum''ing'' yourself and others. This is usually based on informatin of a more factual basis that allows one to make a more informed decision. The experts and posters on this forum are invaluable for those looking to educate themselves. I can understand why it''s done for diamonds and large purchases, but believe it to be even more important for the next President and potential President should they need to step in and govern. I don''t understand why that same support is impossible in this thread. Is it indicative of why America is in the current rut?

Maintaining the status quo by posting ''Spin Opinion'' articles that are clearly part of smear campaigns and posting caustic remarks to a fellow PS''er such as this one I just read from Holly S make me feel sad because we all have a need to be heard and be understood. There is a way of being supportive and to respectfully disagree. There are also times when one should be capable of biting their tongue if their post is merely intended to insult, as I believe this post was. This is not in the spirit of Informing yourself or anyone else. We are capable of so much more light.

I tend to think it''s indicative of the reason behind the saying, one shouldn''t discuss sex, religion or politics at parties.

Short article about how McCain intends to put "some" more than "one" Democrat in his cabinet if elected...whether this will happen & which Democrats he chooses will be interesting. The article also states that Palin will start giving interviews in "a few days." I'm sure she's having mock interviews with McCain's people everyday; I couldn't imagine the type of preparation she is having to go through right now, making sure she doesn't say anything contra to McCain's views, learning everything she can about foreign policy that might be thrown out there, trying to have smart (but not snarky) replies, etc., etc.

**Side note** I didn't know one paragraph about not believing a waitress would stir up such controversy!
20.gif
Due to past & current bickering that has occurred on this thread/forum (myself included), I wanted to apologize to all PSers who come to these threads for my inability to "let something go" the first time I feel confronted. I hope you all know it wasn't my intent to bore/annoy/frustrate you all with any of my many posts on this thread or any other thread around here. I am, perhaps, overly enthusiastic about discussing/defending my views on everything that has been happening in this election & probably need to learn that when someone quotes my post I don't *need* to reply.
1.gif
Arguments & debates, while seen as great things in most other areas of my life, are most of the time not PS-friendly & I respect that. I never knew a PS without this forum, so I wouldn't want it to be taken away for any of us. Anyway, I've actually enjoyed this forum for the most part & will to try my best to keep things on topic & civil (except for this little note, of course).

I don''t think you have anything to apologize for Indygirl. I dropped out a while back b/c I was afraid of becoming too insulting. You were just stating your case, and you did it gracefully. I admire your fortitude.

Well, hopefully, you & more than a few other PSers can rejoin/join this thread since we all have seemingly reconciled & agreed to "Play Nice."

I have no personal ill feelings towards any other PSer (would be silly), so I hope we can keep this all going until the election & then afterwards we can criticize whomever''s in office!

Karen, I''m going to miss your posts. Good luck and I hope that you''ll be back to PS at some point.

No ill will here either. I am going to do my best to steer clear (can''t promise though) only because I enjoy the lighter side of PS, and when I get entangled in the political threads, I find that I can''t enjoy the other stuff as much, and PS is such a great escape for me. Maybe when someone is elected, and we all have a common denominator to pick on....I''ll take you up on that.

Karen, Ditto! I wish we could exchange emails.

I have read this thread with increasing dismay at the disrespect with which some of the more vocal posters have treated each other. I told myself I would not become involved until I read a post ridiculing older women as being jealous of Sarah Palin because she is younger and better looking than them. These comments are offensive, inappropriate and biased. Without older women and the changes they fostered in this country, there wouldn't be a Sarah Palin on the ticket at all. Some posters may think that women's rights are passe'. The women's movement is not something to be taken for granted, nor is its founders.

The post you are referring to was a copy and paste from an article in the Boston Herald (which was cited at the top) and not necessarily the opinion of anyone here or targeted at anyone.

^^^Thank you for the clarification.

Karen! I will miss you, too! I was mostly a lurker around here until this thread sucked me in and I always loved reading your intelligent and logical posts! I''m so bummed out you''re leaving!

Interesting article..sorry if it''s already been posted, but I didn''t see it. Abstinence Only?

VERY interesting article, Sarah.

Yeah, that IS quite interesting...I knew she was very much pro-life in every way, but I hadn't read much about her views on contraception. Like I said in another post on another thread, I think that even if she personally feels strongly about an issue she picks her battles conerning which issues she will strongly pursue politically (i.e. not creationism).

So to all, I wish you well. Of all the folks I'll miss, Moon, and Miracles, I'm gonna miss you both the most I think. Moon, for your enviable ability to let it roll and the fact that we and our men seem to read the same books, and MiraclesRule, for your non-saccharine sweetness all mixed up with tough and intelligent. If there was some way I could figure out to keep in touch with you both, I would. Oh, and also AGBF, Our Lady of Zen. Amazing person.

Karen, I read that you were "leaving" and I had to backtrack to find this posting earlier in the thread. Thank you so much for your kind words about me! I was so very glad to read that you will not be away forever! Many of us need breaks from a thread or a forum from time to time. I have been largely eschewing the political threads myself (while looking in from time to time), because I want to remain a positive member of Pricescope. I have read other members write the same thing. So join the club of those of us who sometimes just can't be political here lest we lose sight of the bigger Pricescope picture! Big hugs to you. Your writing has given me much pleasure over the past months :-).

Hugs,
Deb

As a sign of the media frenzy surrounding Palin, I just listened to Russell Brand (some English personality hosting the MTV VMAs) insult Palin, her daughter, and her daughter's boyfriend in his opening monologue. He also, of course, voiced his support for Obama and called Bush a "retarded cowboy" and went on about how the UK would never have elected him. I obviously don't watch MTV for political analysis, but I just found it odd how transparent MTV made it's support for only one candidate this election. I found everything he said offensive to Americans in general so I will not be watching the rest...back to football.

Kind of off topic

I thought that I could take a mini break and watch a little bit of the VMAs tonight, and of course I''ve got some Brit (the host) telling everyone to vote for Barack Obama, bashing Republicans, and poking fun at Bristol''s boyfriend.

So annoying.

totally agree. i turned the channel and am boycotting mtv. if there was ever an indicator of who NOT to vote for it was that clown.

he also made it painfully clear that his support for obama was just to prove we can have a black president. i mean is that all one needs to become president? gimme a break.

I''ve got some disturbing news for you, too. I took a summer politics class and we were discussing campaign advertising and MTV. And I said, "Well..I don''t really see the point. MTV says it''s demographic is like 18-30, but it''s really like 15-20. So half of them can''t even vote. What''s the point? I mean who here actually watches MTV still anyway..I stopped in high school." annnnnd half my class raised their hand.

I have no problem w/ attacking people on legit issues, but random insults are so useless. I don''t like it when EITHER side does that.

Yeah, his onesidedness was so blatant and tasteless it made me turn the channel immediately! MTV, as a "news source" for some younger kids, used to take responsibility for unbiased reporting (although I always knew they leaned liberal) but it seems that that is now long gone. It seems more apt to just support whomever the celebrities are following around these days. I don't react well to anyone criticizing our democracy (not our COUNTRY but our VOTING), especially one who DOESN'T EVEN LIVE HERE.
20.gif
He just showed himself to be a complete idiot IMHO.

ETA: I'd feel that way if he was insulting to EITHER party/candidate/etc. on such tabloid fodder. MTV isn't exactly the highpoint of our society, but the use of the word "retarded" right after he accuses people of being racist against Obama shows just how ignorant he is. MTV knew of his opening monologue let him on anyway = classless.

Yeah and as a person who has family members that are disabled..it''s quite offensive for people to throw the word "retarded" around.
29.gif
Man I hate MTV. /end my part of the threadjack

MTV has really gone downhill over the years.

Heck, even though Bush not be the brightest bulb in the lamp (or if he is he does not show it well) I think it is uncool to say he is retarded. First, it is offensive to those who are handicapped or disabled. Second, he IS the leader of the United States and as such should at least not have to be bashed on MTV. The British do not turn down help from us when we are needed, and they typically are allies to us so it seems a bit much. Let's bash their leaders on the BAFTA awards and see how they like it. Disliking someone's stance on an issue is valid but just being vile is not.

Indy, I didn''t even see your post above mine before I posted..I was so ticked off!
I just followed your lead and switched the channel.
Totally agree with everything you said. MTV has NO class.
20.gif
I can''t believe they let him say those things on the air--calling our President Retarded, joking about masturbation, implying that we''re all racists if we don''t vote for Obama....disgusting.
29.gif

One thing I noticed is that a lot of the crowd there just sat in disbelief as he was going on with his rant. I guess there is a silver lining. I think I would have puked if there was a standing ovation or something.
