Heck, even though Bush not be the brightest bulb in the lamp (or if he is he does not show it well) I think it is uncool to say he is retarded. First, it is offensive to those who are handicapped. Second, he IS the leader of the United States and as such should at least not have to be bashed on MTV. Let''s bash their leaders on the BAFTA awards and see how they like it. Disliking someone''s stance on an issue is valid but just being vile is not.
Yeah, it was so onesided against Republicans/Palin only (at least be equal opportunity in your insults if you''re trying to be funny and cite real issues). He was insulting to ALL Americans IMHO and he was very offensive to disabled people. He is an Englishman who doesn''t vote, live, or pay taxes here & I felt offended that he repeatedly implied stupidity of American voters. MTV couldn''t find anyone better this year?!

I agree if you want to do it in good fun and pick safe obvious things, do it to both. The bias is UNREAL to me.

Also, this is my peeve, so many countries think all Americans are cowboys or uncooth or brash and loud. Of course some are (hence the Ugly American moniker) but America is not one vast prairie filled with us riding around with our six shooters. So easy to bash us as crude and tasteless and boorish. How ignorant is that stereotype? Yet who do they want to come in and help them in times of crisis?

Indy, I didn't even see your post above mine before I posted..I was so ticked off!
I just followed your lead and switched the channel.
Totally agree with everything you said. MTV has NO class.
20.gif
I can't believe they let him say those things on the air--calling our President Retarded, joking about masturbation, implying that we're all racists if we don't vote for Obama....disgusting.
29.gif

One thing I noticed is that a lot of the crowd there just sat in disbelief as he was going on with his rant. I guess there is a silver lining. I think I would have puked if there was a standing ovation or something.
20.gif
Haha I think we were posting at the same time!
9.gif
I used to like MTV's election coverage (the forums, etc.) but it has obviously turned into something very biased and "vile" (DF said it perfectly!). Everything he said was so tired and I had the feeling he got his material from a blog somewhere. I also noticed that the crowd wasn't really receptive to all of his jokes, so that's a good thing. I was in disbelief when I heard it myself so they probaly felt the same way...regardless of who you're voting for he was insulting. You'd think MTV would be a bit more responsible than to put on an Englishman to insult the American public in its opener.

ETA: SS - totally agree! The set looked like something off of TRL! Quite a downgrade...maybe that's why they had to have this unknown host.

As a sign of the media frenzy surrounding Palin, I just listened to Russell Brand (some English personality hosting the MTV VMAs) insult Palin, her daughter, and her daughter''s boyfriend in his opening monologue. He also, of course, voiced his support for Obama and called Bush a ''retarded cowboy'' and went on about how the UK would never have elected him. I obviously don''t watch MTV for political analysis, but I just found it odd how transparent MTV made it''s support for only one candidate this election. I found everything he said offensive to Americans in general so I will not be watching the rest...back to football.
1.gif

I''ve got some disturbing news for you, too. I took a summer politics class and we were discussing campaign advertising and MTV. And I said, ''Well..I don''t really see the point. MTV says it''s demographic is like 18-30, but it''s really like 15-20. So half of them can''t even vote. What''s the point? I mean who here actually watches MTV still anyway..I stopped in high school.'' annnnnd half my class raised their hand.

I have no problem w/ attacking people on legit issues, but random insults are so useless. I don''t like it when EITHER side does that.

I''m 25 and I watch a handful of things on MTV...the hills, real world....that''s pretty much it. I certainly wouldn''t look to it as a news source so let''s hope that no one else does either.
32.gif

This isn''t anything new with them though...I should have known better! Last election they gave Diddy and his "vote or die" campaign (a.k.a. vote for Kerry or die campaign), and I remember thinking it was so ridiculous.

I noticed the set up too! Pretty small venue compared to what they normally have.

Okay, so I think I'm going to write to MTV. I'm sure they are geting a ton of emails already and I just want to add to it!

ETA: The feedback on MTV's site is completely littered with unhappy people right now. I'm trying to sign up to comment and it is taking FOREVER. I hope their server crashes!

ETAA: I guess this guy used to be a VJ but then was fired when HE CAME TO WORK DRESSED AS OSAMA BIN LADEN the day after 9/11...why MTV would hire him on as a host for the VMAs is beyond me...

I know that it is very difficult for opposing sides not to come into this thread and ''defend'' their position.

I stuck around PS because I truly believed it to be a supportive environment in the spirit of ''INforum''ing'' yourself and others. This is usually based on informatin of a more factual basis that allows one to make a more informed decision. The experts and posters on this forum are invaluable for those looking to educate themselves. I can understand why it''s done for diamonds and large purchases, but believe it to be even more important for the next President and potential President should they need to step in and govern. I don''t understand why that same support is impossible in this thread. Is it indicative of why America is in the current rut?

Maintaining the status quo by posting ''Spin Opinion'' articles that are clearly part of smear campaigns and posting caustic remarks to a fellow PS''er such as this one I just read from Holly S make me feel sad because we all have a need to be heard and be understood. There is a way of being supportive and to respectfully disagree. There are also times when one should be capable of biting their tongue if their post is merely intended to insult, as I believe this post was. This is not in the spirit of Informing yourself or anyone else. We are capable of so much more light.

I tend to think it''s indicative of the reason behind the saying, one shouldn''t discuss sex, religion or politics at parties.

I posted a message on the feedback blog, the live at the VMAs blog, AND Viacoms blog!!! Viacom handles all the advertising for MTV, if I remember correctly.
When I first went to the site there were 800 comments, there are now almost 5000!!!! And that''s just the feedback blog!
36.gif

I also plan on going to a site called Vevmo. It''s a reality TV forum but also covers MTV real world (real world members actually post there...lol). There is a guy there who works FOR viacom...I''m going to try and get the scoop from him!

LOL, this commentary strikes me as ironic on a thread about Palin, since much of what you describe "cowboys, six shooters and open land" are what she is aiming to represent.

We aren''t "allowed" to talk race on this forum, so I will immediately get off the horse, but if a black woman, let''s say, Michelle Obama, was in pictures with an assault rifle, end of story. If Michelle Obama was part of a cessionist party, end of story.

THAT, my friends, is hypocrisy. I will not be responding to or defending this particular post, because forum rules disallow, and I would like the thread to continue. Take it as you will, as food for thought.

I don't think you're reading the post in the context in which it was written (maybe). FWIW, I don't think being pro-2nd Amendment or an avid hunter (which can be done responsibly & used to be the norm in the US) = cowboys w/six shooters. DF was simply replying to the fact that some British wahoo was insulting our country, as a whole IMHO, by pretty much calling us stupid for electing a "retarded cowboy," adding to the negative stereotype other countries have of America to begin with. Of course, if you think Palin is being more favorably by the media than Michelle would in the same position you are entitled to that opinion.

I thought that the reader comments about the VMAs were up to 5000, but that was really a total of all comments from the beginning of the blog (which opened a few months ago). About 1200 are VMA related...JUST on the feedback blog.
There is also a lot on the live blog.

I just flipped it on MTV again and as soon as I did I just heard Russel Brand making fun of chastity rings again.

I just got it from a friend yesterday. Her PhD brother gave it to her and told her it was a "must read". She said it made her reconsider the way she analyzed things in the past. She gave a few provocative examples and it definately made me look forward to reading it.

Speaking of judgements, I have a confession. Today I was in line at the bar at half time and there are always people who are cutting in the front of the line to join friends or whatever...it can get ugly. At one point, an older lady walked brazenly up to the front and I *assumed* that she was trying to sweet talk the bartender into serving her and then she walked away. I made some snarky comment to the people in line and it was fairly witty but not so flattering in a political sense and everyone thought it was hysterical. Then I was in the ladies room and she did the same thing, she came walking in and went directly to the front and I said "Hey, no cutting lines in the ladies room, unless you pay us" and as it turns out she had lost her Drivers License and was frantically going everyway she had been to find it...the bar, and the bathroom. I felt so bad...and apologized.

It just goes to show...things aren't always as they appear to be.

I just want to fix my mistake...

Figures.
Then Perez came on and stuck up for the Jonas Brothers for following their values. This is a man who was calling Bristol Palin a sl*t and a wh*re on his site the day her pregnancy was made public.

Makes me so sick. And sad.

''Consider the source'' and that''s all I have to say about that. (<----in my best Forrest Gump impersonation)

Um. As far as I know (and it''s pretty well, because I''ve been reading it for a LONG time) Perez calls everyone sl*ts and wh*res when he doesn''t like them. And he flip flops on liking people ALL of the time, so basically he''s called most people those names. I think he calls them that even when he does like them sometimes.

I say, it''s Perez being Perez, and that means squat to me.

BTW, as a former waitress (and I''m sure not the only one)...I have been

at some of the comments made on this thread.

I waitressed for seven years. What does that have to do with anything? If you''re referring to my comments, I was merely stating that a waitress''s comment is hardly a credible source. Video, sure. Hearsay? Not so much. By the way, I referred to her as the "waitress" because she chose to remain anonymous. It wasn''t an attack on her profession.

As for Perez''s comments about Bristol, I still feel they were highly inappropriate. For one, he doesn''t "know" her, he dislikes her mother--two completely different things. And his comments were just.....disgusting, IMO.

"Palin''s daughter, Bristol Palin (above), 17 years old, is pregnant. The sl*tty teen is keeping the baby and plans to marry its father."
"The Palins issued a statement Monday about their wh*re daughter."

Trillionaire, my point was that Americans are GLOBALLY perceived to be rough necks, and ill bred illiterates and lots of other countries think of us as having a cowboy mentality and so they lump us all together as being the same rough and tumble ignorant wild folks. America is viewed as this wild vast frontier, and we are treated as little more than lunatics who go around shooting at anyone and anything. I am NOT pro Palin in terms of some of her views. She is a woman, and a mom, and we have that in common. But that is about it right now, except that I would like to start getting some oil from our own country and would like to think there is a way to do so safely without harm to the ecosystem...I can dream. But on MANY issues she is not representative of me, not at all. I do not view the US in totality as the Wild West, but I respect those states in which hunting and fishing are part of their culture. I have a choice to live my life differently and so I do. But calling us names and insinuating we are all a bunch of hellions with no couth is another. We are the butt of many jokes world wide I hate to say.

My point was that this British man was ridiculing us and basing his ridicule in part on the notion held by MANY other countries that we are not bright or elegant or sophisticated, hence we even elected a retarded cowboy to lead us. Like, oh what a shock that retarded Americans who are all like cowboys in the way they think and act elected a retarded cowboy to run their country. And I am NOT trying to insult cowboys, I do not know any and have no reason to think anything of them that is negative. But I have relatives in Europe and Canada and have traveled extensively enough to know that as a whole Americans are not viewed in such a great light, except when we can be of use.

BTW, when were you a Trojan? I graduated from there in 1989...
