Fancy cuts and ASETs

I have been reading as much as I can find (and what has been suggested by other users) and watching lots of youtube videos and still, I feel like there are some pretty big gaps in my awareness. I get what the various colors mean (except black, is that equal to white in an ASET?), but I don't know what amazing should look like. I am hoping perhaps someone can make sense of the ASET as it relates to fancy cuts, and in particular, radiant cuts.

I recently received some ASET tests back on a few diamonds and while I can clearly see that some are better than others as there is much more red present in some versus others, and some depict the "crushed ice" look, what I can't seem to find anywhere is an image of what a fancy cut ASET should look like if it is an "ideal" cut. Please note, I am fully aware that there is no such thing as an official ideal cut for a fancy cut based on what I have read here an elsewhere. What I am trying to say is that I cannot find what the ASET should look like in the best possible circumstances for various fancy cuts. I have seen people say that some are good, decent, great, etc. but all the articles will show rounds, sometimes princess, and then stop there.

Can anyone point me in the direction of a whitepaper, article, thread, etc. that I may have missed?

For anyone who may have been reading my previous posts with the ASETs I get that I may seem a bit obsessive here but I made a big mistake with the first stone we bought and I am simply unwilling to make a mistake again. I feel pretty lucky that my fiance has let me completely choose all elements of my ring and I want to make sure I do the best job I can this time.

Thank you!

Thanks Gypsy! This is actually the same article I finished reading right before posting lol. I keep looking for an example of really great ASETs for cushions, radiant, oval.. anything to get a feel for how different it is okay for them to be from the rounds and princesses of the world.

I think I'll just need to take a deep breath and deal with not knowing all the facts before purchasing this diamond.

That said, if anyone can think of an ASET they have seen that they thought was amazing for any fancy cut, please post as an example?? :wink2:

I think you would be better off picking a few stones putting them on hold and letting the gurus here look at the ASET images for you, if you can get real life video images as well that is also a bonus, that way we can see how the stones perform as they move as well....

Some of the GOG videos that show how stones correlate to different ASET images might help you.

Thanks for the reply Arkieb! I should have linked this post earlier, sorry.

So those are the ASETs I am currently obsessing over. I have also watched a lot of GOG youtube lately and am concerned because for the most part, most radiants have such a small splinter light return that I am really hoping I can find one that doesn't. My fingers are currently crossed for the first one on that post.

According to JA all three of those have more of a medium chunky light return (which is my preference) so.. here's hoping!

O.K I read the link. I was going to suggest (before I read the link) have you ever thought about a cushion if you hate the crushed ice look of radiants? You have really great advice from Gypsy as to which stones have the best ASET images, either stone the first radiant or the cushion should be fine, you need to get them in person and see if you like them, if not then send them back. Both should be nicer than the original EGL stone.

Completely agreed. I have been lucky to have great advice (thank you Gypsy, Julie, tyty and everyone else!).

Just so I am clear, I am not continuing to research because I am not trusting the feedback and guidance I am getting. I truly am so grateful for all the help and patience people have had with me here. I am simply highly risk adverse (it's just me - part of my profession as well) and want to make sure that I am using my fiance's money wisely. I think if I get another stone and return it he may completely lose patience with this entire process. I am on the verge of getting the first radiant but wanted to be sure to review every single data point I could first.

Thanks!

The ASETs for the diamonds you are considering are head and shoulders above your old stone. If you had an ASET for the old stone, it would be terrible in comparison.
