Fair Price?

I'm looking at this diamond this afternoon and was wondering if 7,850 is a fair price for it:

I was originally looking for clean SI1 Options, but this VS1 stood out because the dimensions (8.70x6.02) seem to be fairly large for the carat size which is my number one priority. After looking around for similarly priced diamonds, it seems that if I go up in carat size and down in clarity or color (to H), the dimensions seem to be smaller, which wouldn't make the diamond appear bigger, which in my opinion, wouldn't make sense to get instead of the one above. Do you have any up close pictures? Do you know how to pick ovals? I assume you've seen this stone right? Ovals cant be picked by the numbers like
rounds (no fancy cut can...like marquise, cushions, pears...).

So I can go look up a 1.24 G/VS1 and tell you the price but not knowing if its a well cut stone or not doesnt really tell you much.

The price does seem in-line/good with 1.24 G/VS1s on line. You are correct in that the face up size is more important than the carat size but only after making sure that its a nice oval with a nice faceting pattern that is reflecting light well and that it is not too shallow (which the stone above is not).

I do see that the polish and symmetry are both "excellent", but I know ovals do not come with a cut grade. How would I go about making sure it was a nice faceting pattern? I have seen a number of ovals in person, but have not seen any from this particular jewelry store yet.

Here are a few things to look for (these are generic; not just related to you)
but I'll post some links to some ovals that look nice so you have something to compare yours with...

In nice ovals look for...
- make sure no black bow-tie
- look for nice oval shape (no shoulders)
- look for nice ratio
- good light return...lots of facets going on/off throughout the stone (good light performance),
- clear well defined facets as stone turns (also related to good light performance),
- look for minimal mush (grayish/brownish/yellowish undefined facets) (also related to light performance),
- look for center facets feathering out nicely
- dont go too far down in color or you will see a lot of color in the mushy areas (unless you are ok with this). I try to stick with H and above...sometimes "I"
depending on the budget/size requirements

Ovals that I* consider nice (ignore size/color/cost/inclusions...just look at performance, faceting pattern)

Thanks a ton for your help. It really gives me a good idea what to look for going into today. My budget is around $8,000 for the diamond and I'd go down to H and "clean" SI1's, the goal is for the diamond to look as big as possible for that budget while also still being a good/great diamond overall.

I actually googled the GIA # and found it for sale at IDJewelry (good reviews) for $7,350. I'm thinking I should use this price as a negotiating tactic if I do in fact like the diamond.

Call IDJ and tell them you're interested in this stone and ask them if the have others. Mention that pricescope sent you so he will know that you're looking for a certain level of awesomeness. I know he can do ASET scopes, so if this diamond is on NY, he could get his hands on it and send you images (to post here for analysis). Good luck with your search.
