Hi everyone!

It''s been a few weeks since I''ve posted and so I think that it''s time to give everyone an update on my adventures in diamond buying land. For those of you who want to read about my story you can check out these links:

link1

link2.

First I''ll start with the diamond because I''m afraid to get inundated with responses of the like "pics! pics!". In the end I got this diamond from GOG:

http://www.goodoldgold.com/1_057ct_i_si1_h%26a.htm.

There''s quite a story to this purchase and the proposeal, and I won''t go into the details right now because I havn''t slept in about 36 hours and can''t type anything coherent (holidays are never as restful as you would hope). The important detail is that she said yes

!! So now we are looking to get an apraisal and I was wondering if anyone knew of a good apraiser in the Calgary area (in Alberta, Canada). Also, I was wondering if it even mattered because I already have more information than I could ever need from Jonathan at GOG and I trust that it is correct. So basically, I just need the apraisal for insurance purposes. So should I even worry? As long as the appraiser in independent should it even matter who I take? Thanks once again for your help!

I promise that I''ll give more details about the engagement soon!

Congrates!!!
Awesome diamond!
Most insurance companies require an apprraisal to get insurance so id have one done.

thanks! So do you think it even matters what kind of appraiser I go to? As long as he's (or she's) independent, do you think it's fine?

yea likely most would do,
Tell them you want a cert matching and insurance appraisal and want a reasonable appraisal not 2x current retail.
Id find one that would do it with you sitting there that way there isnt a chance of tampering.

If they have a problem with either keep looking.

Congratulations, SG!

I clicked on the links and read through your ordeal. My goodness, you really put some thought into this -- I'm anxiously awaiting "the rest of the story" as to how you ended up back with the GOG stone, but rest comes first, so go get some so that you can come back and tell us. :-)

What a beautiful stone!! Congrats!

Congratulations! It looks like you have yourself a great stone! When you have some time, let us know about the setting and how you proposed. I hope that your fiancee's health is doing well.....

I also bought from GOG - and yes, you can use that paperwork to insure your new stone.

We did go to another appraiser for $80 US to tell us - well the same thing. We got a great stone. It was nice to have a second opinion. Just wanted to let you know that there were no differences in what the apprasier found with the stone as per all the reports that GOG gives.

Actually, she thought that the AGS graded the stone a little strict (

Anyway - we are sending probably GOG's documentation for insurance purposes. The more the better we feel for documentation purposes

Congratulations!!!

Congrats on the nice stone...

Yum, what a great stone! I've always thought that I SI1 was the best combination for your money. And look at all those results! Wow!

Congratulations! I'm so happy for you! When you get a chance (after sleeping, letting it all sink in, and telling all your loved ones the story), let us know all the details!

Congratulations on your engagement. It's great to hear that everything worked out so well for the both of you.

I love the Lightscope image, very eye popping. I'm sure in person this thing is magnificent!

Have you taken any pix of the stone yourself yet? Pictures pictures (see I had to do it!)

Congrats to you. Best Wishes to your fiancee! Sound like you got the best of both worlds with this stone!

Of course we want details, pics & what your fiancee thinks of the ring!

Hi everybody,

So here's the long awaited story (well, maybe not long-awaited, but here it anyway). The deal was that I originally wanted a 1 ct stone because that's what seemed to be the most important thing for everybody. Then I found this pricescope forum and am really happy I did because I was introduced to the concept of quality! Yay! So then insued a long and obsessive month. I had two problems: the first was being able to find something that I could afford, and the second was that I was working with a really tight schedule and couldn't figure out how to get the ring without her knowing anything about it. So this is how it all went down...

First the money thing. I didn't have the ressources to buy the ring before the end of December, which obviously creates problems for the timing thing. To try to fix this, I applied for a gold card around the first week of December. I never thought it would work since even though I'm doing my phd, I'm still a student. Anyway, for some strange reason, I got the card and they gave me WAY more credit that I thought. This was both very nice and scary (like my avatar!) at the same time. But, problem 1 was solved.

After this, I still needed to figure out how to get the stone before Christmas. I only had about a week left and really would of liked to see it in person before I bought. I was even thinking about flying over to NY, but it's kind of hard to find an excuse for leaving so suddenly, and besides this would of been quite expensive since I live around 4000K away. This was around Saturday the 13th. Then, that very night, one of my friends had this "budy pass" for a flight anywhere in Canada that had to be used that very weekend. So I took him up on his offer and flew to Montreal since I just moved from there and had tons of buddied I could visit. Heheheh... perfect excuse. So the next day I flew to Montreal, and then went to the greyhound bus station around 10pm, planning to go to NY that night. Unfortunately I find out that all the roads are blocked because of this huge snow storm!!! Argh! I didn't know what to do because this meant that I'd have to wait an extra day and miss my return flight. It was like nature was testing my resolve!! Well, I thought that since I'd come all this way I should follow through with the whole thing. The next day the roads were clear and thus I took the redeye bus over to the big apple. I got there at 9am the next day, took the train to long island and then walked to GOG with my mind set on getting a 1.056ct J stone. Even though there were a lot of other ones that would have been just fine, I ultimately went with GOG because I was on a really tight schedule and really liked all the info that GOG posted on their website. So anywho, I have to say that my visit with Jonathan was great. He treated me like I was buying the most expensive thing in this store, and took the time to answer all my questions. I can' thank Jonathan, Chriten, and the rest of his staff enough for their help. So I decided on the 1.056 J stone. They even went out of their way to set the stone that very day! All was well...

When I came back that afternoon, something horrible happened! My stone was chipped during the setting process!! Argh! I didn't know what to do! By no small miracle, after learning that my diamond had chipped and knowing that I needed it that afternoon, Jonathan decided to set the ring onto another stone instead. Since the new one was more expensive, Jonathan gave me a good rebate making the new rock within my reach...phew! So that night I left with this baby: http://www.goodoldgold.com/1_057ct_i_si1_h%26a.htm which has a better colour and better isee2 results! The I took the train, bus and plane back and finally I got home with the ring. Mission accomplished!

For the Chritmas holidays we flew to Ottawa to see my family and friends and this is where I proposed. I had originally planned to ask her on the rideau canal (the worlds longuest outdoor skating rink) which is absolutely beautiful around Christmas. However, it had been unusually hot and the canal was a big puddle of water. Skating was definitively out of the question. Instead we went to Parliament Hill and I proposed in front of the parliament buildings with all the lights and all. It was beautiful! I asked some people to take a picture of us, and when my girfriend turned around, I was on my knee and proposed to her. It took her about ten seconds to respond, but then she said yes! I don't have a picture though 'cause te flash did;t work

.

Since, things have been kind of crazy. One thing is certain though: she really, really LOVES the diamond. It sparkles so much! When looking for settings, one jeweler actually assumed that it was a 1.25ct! Another one thought that it was so white that it must be a D-E diamond. She was quite shocked when we told her it was actually an I!!

So that's my story. I can't show you any pictures yet since we don't have any digital cameras. I will post something eventually though. Thank you everyone for all of your help, I really, reallty appreciate it!

WOW!! What a story!! Great happy ending too!!

Especially the part about getting a better stone!!

Aw, that's a wonderful story. I love the part where you surprise her during the picture.

Sounds like Jonathan really came through for you -- how cool, especially the part where you got to go up a color. :-)

Congratulations -- I'm sure that ring sparkles like mad. Looking forward to pictures of it someday. :-)

Thanks for telling us your story! My husband and I were in Ottawa last spring and I couldn't believe how beautiful Parliment Hill was. I can just imagine it with Christmas lights...sigh.

Thanks - Great Story - I admire your resolve to visit the stone in person!

Congratulations! What a nice story. You really jumped through some hoops to make things happen right. Well done to both you and Jonathon!

Yay what a great story. Kudos to GOG and Jonathan for making things right and you for going that extra mile (or more on the bus?) to really get an amazing stone for your girl. As to people thinking it's bigger, it's amazing what a well-cut stone will look like to people who don't know what they look like!

Congratulations!
