eternity band for an ering.. thoughts please!

Hi all, I would love some thoughts on having an eternity band as an ering. I've never had my heart set on any one shape or design so when I saw this attached pic (jennifer garner's 4.5 tcw), my heart swooned (btw thanks miss bling*diva* for this pic!). Now, my heart swoons for MANY of your sparkly rocks (thanks gals! =D) but this one stood out to me. I think it will be a ring like this (18 .20pointers) or a 1.5ct ACA round solitaire set in a plain band. I think this is something I can always wear bc its low set and lush at the same time. My bf, isn't really into this idea. He likes the solitaire with a 7stone band. Does anyone have this type of eternity band as an ering? Many thanks in advance.

EDIT: my bf said i can get a 2ct ACA for our 10th anniversary... i think by then i would be more age appropriate? (is there such thing?) right now i feel a bit hesitant wearing something so $ on my hand everyday. Is this normal?

I think it's a fabulous idea. Didn't Audrey Hepburn or Marilyn Monroe or someone like that have a baguette eternity as an e-ring? I think it's a cool idea, different and classy. a

I love this ring as a stand alone once you''re married, but I don''t think I''d want it as an e-ring. It looks like a wedding band, IMO. For me, it''s important symbolism to get a full circle ring like this for the wedding to represent the eternal union. I know I may be too traditional, but that''s how I feel.

A girlfriend of mine just got married and her e-ring/w-ring is the Daniel K U-ternity with 80 pt aschers all around -- W

W!!! I LOVE the idea! (She also got a plain platinum band to wear when she's doing anything heavy with her hands.)

Ooooo, love that Mark Morell number! Very smooth. I think as long as you think you''d be fine with not having a solitaire, it''s a great idea. Nothing wrong with bucking tradition! But you could always angle for a solitaire later if you feel the need....like on a big anniversary.

DEEJAY - the U-prong setting with 80-pointers??? I''m in shock. U-prong settings are high-set to begin with, and asschers are so deep, and 80pointers are HUGE. Is your friend able to close her hand or even place her adjacent fingers anywhere near her ring finger??? Man, sounds gorgoeus but totally unwearable!!!

I think it''s up to the individual. If you want people to know you are engaged just by looking at your hand though, they will think you are already married. I also don''t know what kind of comments you might get when you tell people you are engaged and show them what is essentially a wedding band. Not that it matters, but just something to think about.

My thoughts exactly. It would be a wedding band. Personally, I'd want both a solitaire and the eternity band eventually. I do think a partial eternity is more practical for everyday wear, though. I am conscious of gripping things and thinking of the wear and tear it will do to little prongs on that underside of the finger. So I am happy with the e-ring and 7 stone band for everyday wear, but I'd love to have an eternity band like the one you pictured to wear on occasion as an anniversary band. See, if you get all three, then you don't have to decide anything but the order in which to get them!

Oh, and no, I cannot see any negatives about wearing a solitaire e-ring! I LOVE them, too!

my e-ring is also gonna be a 1/2 eternity band. and my wedding ring will be a solitaire...

It''s a bit different here in Malaysia... It is not necessary to have certain type of rings for both occasion..

I think your idea will be lovely! However, be sure to try on some full eternity bands with larger stones. Not all of them are comfortable, but mm probably would be. I am also in the market for a band, and I decided to go with a 5-stone with 30 pointers. It will be more comfortable on my finger and I can get maximum blingage for the money. If you find full eternity style to be too uncomfortable this might be an option for you. Depending on your finger size and stone sizes, you might need to go up to a 7-stone to cover your finger.

Happygal, KD and Lisa - I actually had this ring ON MY HAND and didn't take a picture -- what the hell was I thinking? It really is beautiful, but I have to say it didn't sparkle like my (smaller!) round eternity band does.

Interestingly, even though the ring was true to size (she is a 6) it is way to big on her. The jeweler who made it said it's becuase so little of the metal touches her finger (I have no idea if that makes sense or not). She often wears her plain platinum band on the outside so that the eternity band doesn't fall off, especially now that the weather is getting cooler.

As for comfort, for her last marriage she had an eternity band of 1 ct ovals (YES, YOU HEARD ME RIGHT!) so this one isn't a problem for her. (She also had a 4 ct oval e-ring with 1 ct oval sides, but that's a whole 'nother matter, LOL.)

I wore my eternity solo as er and wr for a while. I really liked the mystery, the elegance, and statliness (sp?) of it. Now I wear a solitaire, wr, and the eternity. It depends on what I''m doing, where I''m going, and the mood of the day. There are no rights and wrongs--just FUN. The only thing is, if you got a solitaire, yrs down the road, you might want to upgrade and trade it using it''s value (if your company has a life time policy for solitaires). You probably wouldn''t get the same trade in value with an eternity band.

I am not sure when you added this, but waiting 10 years to buy a 2 ct. diamond is going to cost you big bucks. Prices only go up...and often moreso on the larger diamonds. It would be wise to go ahead and get a smaller solitaire now that can be traded up later. That way you have at least locked in part of the price. And I might add that by the 10th anniversary, there are often many more important things to spend money on like homes and furnishings, children, etc. Small stones aren''t likely to be as expensive as larger ones, so you don''t risk so much to wait and get an eternity band later since they generally do not cost as much as a 1.5-2.0 diamond solitaire.

I recently saw a graph of diamond prices, and there is a sharper curve upward for stones above 2 cts. I do think there are people who invest in diamonds, but you''d have to have a way to get them wholesale to really make it worthwile, I would think! I don''t know a thing about diamond investing, really, just diamond buying to wear!!!

As the others said, though, do what makes YOU happiest!

It will be a while before pictures since I haven''t pulled the trigger yet, but I will definitely show lots of pictures when I get it. As a pricescoper I am always changing my mind, and I just want to make sure that this is the ring I want LOL! My e-ring is a stand alone ring (split shank style), so I will be wearing them on opposite hands.

I can''t wait to see how your project unfolds, it''s going to be beautiful.

~~I may be in the minority, but I like the idea!! I personally intend to do the same thing when I get engaged...a 4.5-5 carat eternity band with a plain band as the w-band. If I were you though, I would try on some bands in different carats weights to make sure that that's what you want to do. Good luck with your purchase, and be sure to keep us posted!!

BTW, I love that Mark Morrell band (the heart prongs are to die for!!)!!!
