I''''m looking for a ring for my girlfriend. She''''s really small, and so''''s my wallet. I don''''t think she wants me to get her anything huge or fancy, since she''''s pointed out only smaller, slender rings when we''''ve been looking. This is a good thing, as I don''''t have a lot of money right now; I''''m paying off graduate school student loans, and I''''m also building a house for our married life.

So, I''''m trying to find a nice ring for under one thousand dollars. I''''ve seen a few in mall stores, but I think she''''d prefer something a little less common than the average tiffany ring. Any ideas, please?

Please also know I am not being cheap. I''''m being reasonable, and I know, too, from our conversations, very serious conversations, that she does not want a big rock. If she did, I''''d put off asking and save up. As it is, she''''s anxious for the day to come when I finally ask. :) I am, too!

welcome to ps!
there is absolutely nothing at all with wanting a smaller ring and you are to be commended for not trying to purchase something beyond your means. if you''ve only looked at mall store diamonds, you will be absolutely amazed at what a well cut stone (NOT found in mall stores) can look like. also, the lower color /clarity stones that are graded by gia or ags will be amazingly clean and white. don''t worry... we''ll help find a great stone in your budget. let the search begin!

You can get a nice half carat stone in a simple setting for a little over $1000. I would put the maximum into the stone and let her get a more elaborate setting later if she wants.

You can get this beauty from www.antiqueengagementrings.com for $975. They are great to work with -- we have purchased a couple of his rings as right hand rings. This is a classic.

How would she feel about a colored stone such as an emerald or a sapphire? Not only are they gorgeous, but they are also in style right now...and a lot less expensive. You will not look cheap if you get a sapphire stone, but some women do not like a colored stones though. You could always replace the colored stone with a diamond later as well. You might want to consider asking if she would like something like that. Here are some links to some attractive (at least I think so) colored stone engagement rings in your budget or very close to the 1k range. Another idea would be skipping the engagement ring and getting a fancy wedding band and buying an engagement ring later as an aniversary gift. However, you should probably get her opinions on this as well. Some women wouldn''t care and others would really want an engagement ring. Hope this helps. I''ve also put some links in for some fancy wedding bands as well. Let me know if you like/don''t like any of these and I''ll send some more links from other sites.

When you say you don''t want the average Tiffany ring, does that mean you don''t want a solitaire?

I read your other thread to get a better idea. I liked the tulip idea, and the wave idea. You mentioned that she likes waves and clean lines...This idea might be a bit too modern, but I thought I would throw it out there for conversation. I''ve posted a link below of an engagement ring. It can be customized with a smaller diamond to be within 1k. This type of setting is called tension set because it doesn''t use prongs and what holds it together is the tension between the two bands. They create this tension by heating and cooling the metal until it is "springy." These settings are great because they don''t catch on anything like prongs...but they have their disadvantages too.--one extremely hard center hit and the diamond will pop out. However, this is more of a problem for larger diamonds than for ones your size.

Thanks, people!

I didn''t know what I was doing when I placed this in the wrong spot, so thanks for moving it. But yeah, my other "thread" is full of what I think my girl will just love. :)

Thanks for all the suggestions and ideas!
