Engagement Ring: Do clarity and color matter to naked eye?

My boyfriend has brought me to diamonds to choose from and I keep going back and fourth and need help, as I don't know much about diamonds.

I am deciding between 2 pear shape diamonds, both diamonds are brilliant cuts and will be set with a halo.
1.9 karat, brillant cut, "SI2" clarity, and "I" color grade
VS.
1.5 karat, brillant cut, "VSI" clarity, and "F" color grade.

Both rings are absolutely beatiful and I know I am lucky to have the choice. Cleary the smaller diamond is a better color and clarity, but will it really matter to someone without a microscope?? Is bigger better here?? Does the halo make a difference or will it take away from the diamond?

Hi there,

If the larger one looked really beautiful to you and you don't mind a warmer colored stone, I would pick the 1.9ct one! If, however, you see the inclusion almost straight away...I would avoid it... because it would end up bothering me. A delicate halo can look really pretty, with half pointer melee ;)

Please click on "report concern" to move this thread to the 'Rockytalky" section... maybe more people can help you there :)

Personally, with a fancy cut, I'd say yes. I have a pear cut & we looked at many stones before picking the one. I ended up getting a D colour VS1 clarity because it was the clearest & had the most fire. Some of the more included pears looked a bit like they were covered in soap & very cloudy.

But then again, it depends on how well cut the pear actually is. Some cuts are far better than others, and that can make a huge difference.

Thank you!! By looking at the stones I can't tell the difference right off the bat. I am so torn here.

Re: Engagement Ring: Do clarity and color matter to naked ey

Go with what your eyes tell you. You are the one who will be looking at it every day (and I am sure it won't be with a microscope). You're going to be wearing the ring, not the paperwork!

Re: Engagement Ring: Do clarity and color matter to naked ey

If you can't see a difference & they're well cut, then go for the bigger stone :))

Re: Engagement Ring: Do clarity and color matter to naked ey

Also, I am just now noticing this on the certificate---Are the girdle and culet something to consider?

Re: Engagement Ring: Do clarity and color matter to naked ey

There are a lot of things I'd consider first in regards to a pear before clarity and color. Does it have a bowtie? Is the shape nice? Some are long and thin some are chubby and cute. You have to make sure the tip isn't dead.

Now as for clarity, I'd go si1 comfortably because its likely to be eye clean because of the type of the pinpoint facetting

Pears hold more color. So you may see a tin in an I. If its well cut tthough it should be that bad.

I wwould, however, se both in pperson before deciding.

What do you mean by dead tip? I am trying to upload a pic, but cant seem to figure it out?

Here are the rings. The ring on my ring finger is the 1.9 stone and the ring on my pinky is the 1.5
I would be keeping the setting of the 1.9 k and if choosing the 1.5, I would add a halo. Thoughts?

Re: Engagement Ring: Do clarity and color matter to naked ey

Does the top sparkle? That's basically what I mean.

Oh gosh I really really love that 1.5! I wouldn't change a thing about that setting its so classic and stunning.

Re: Engagement Ring: Do clarity and color matter to naked ey

I wouldn't halo it, but that's just ME! PRETTY!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Engagement Ring: Do clarity and color matter to naked ey

The 1.5 setting is much prettier.

Re: Engagement Ring: Do clarity and color matter to naked ey

The 1.5 definitely looks brighter and whiter. Can you get a straight-on picture so we can tell more about the cut?

Re: Engagement Ring: Do clarity and color matter to naked ey

Are the dimensions between the two significantly different?

Re: Engagement Ring: Do clarity and color matter to naked ey

IMHO, I'd say go with the 1.5! Whiter and prettier stone ;D

I was wondering about the actual stone measurements too...just going by the pic, the 1.9 doesn't look that much bigger than the 1.5.

eta: and I think the 1.5 looks whiter and brighter as well.

I agree. Though I will say I'd be so sad to see that beautiful three stone setting cast aside. I'd rather see you buy a loose stone or (even better) leave it in the setting its in

Re: Engagement Ring: Do clarity and color matter to naked ey

the 1.5 measurements are 10.23x 6.68 x3.29 mm
the 1.9 measurements are 9.38 x6.33 x 4.80 mm

thanks for all the help everyone!! :twirl:

So the higher clarity and color looks bigger? As long as its a good performing stone seems like a no brainer..

Here is a better view. rings.png

Re: Engagement Ring: Do clarity and color matter to naked ey

Go with the F. Leave it as is. Unless of course she really wants a halo :D

Re: Engagement Ring: Do clarity and color matter to naked ey

The 1.5 has a depth of 49.3%, which is not all that common. I would have it looked at by an expert.

Re: Engagement Ring: Do clarity and color matter to naked ey

The 1.5 looks bigger and has better stats.

Re: Engagement Ring: Do clarity and color matter to naked ey

JulieN is that depth a good or bad thing?

Re: Engagement Ring: Do clarity and color matter to naked ey

It is pretty far outside the normal range. I don't know if it is good or bad.

Re: Engagement Ring: Do clarity and color matter to naked ey

I second the suggestion of having the cut appraised on both of these stones. Cut is the most important in choosing a stone - not the color and clarity IMO. We all perceive color and clarity differently but a dull, poorly cut stone would be a no go for most of us.

Re: Engagement Ring: Do clarity and color matter to naked ey

If what the average Joe or Josephine walking down the street can discriminate with the naked eye is your standard ... does getting a REAL diamond even make sense?

So many fakes look indistinguishable to real diamonds to the above folk.

IMO, insisting on a D IF is no more irrational than insisting on a REAL diamond.

Re: Engagement Ring: Do clarity and color matter to naked ey

clarity and color does matter.

Here's the priority in the order that I would place:

1) Cut
2) Carat
3) Color
4) Clarity

Re: Engagement Ring: Do clarity and color matter to naked ey

I would go with the one you find the liveliest and prettiest. I like the solitaire setting better. Halos are very pretty but I believe they do take away from the center diamond.
