Hello everyone,

I am in the process of picking an engagement ring for my fiance. I have been saving for a long time, but really haven't narrowed it down. Budget is approximately $30k. We are officially engaged, but decided to hold off on a big "rock" until we could pay cash. She is leaving it entirely to me at this point. I plan on buying from a vendor here, either Whiteflash, or a broker who can get me a diamond the quality of "ideal" at a minimum. We have looked at diamonds, and this is the feeling I get about her preferences:

most important: quality of cut and light reflection
2nd most: size (ties into light reflection)
3rd: color (face up white; we looked at stones in the H to K range, hard to see much of a tint even on the K stone really, although the price difference is substantial. I don't see us buying above I, for example, and her earrings are J color, very well cut, she loves them).
4th: clarity. She is fine with a stone that isn't eye clean, as long as there isn't a huge black hole covering 1/2 of the table. Anything Si1 more than adequate.

From what I have read, think of the purchase like a pizza; the budget determines the size of the pizza, and then make the biggest slices the preferred characteristics (In this case, huge slice cut, smallish size clarity).

My first thought was to grab a nice, low color stone. $30k buys me a 3ct J color Super Ideal from Whiteflash, for example. But, I am worried that it will be "too" big for her hand. Anyone with experience with that situation? We live in an upscale area, but people are pretty dressed down, you don't see too many 3+ carat diamonds, then again, that could just be cheap husbands. I figure anyone driving a $100k sportscar shouldn't be putting a Kay Jewelers $1999 special on their future bride's finger.

2nd thought: there is a really nice I color, AGS Ideal (000), 2.31ct, that a diamond broker located for me. He brought it in, definitely stunning, even compared to the Hearts on Fire product he carries, 99% the equal in performance. Relatively affordable too at $17,800. With the money left over, I could put together a really stunning 3-stone ring. Given that center stone, what would be the appropriate sized side stones be? Color, given the middle is an I color?

Finally, what will generally look better and be more appropriate? 2 totally different styles of rings. She loves trying on rings: I know this will be the "one" purchase I make that she will always remember and cherish, and I want to get it right!

She is fairly tall, thin, size 5.5 finger, mid 40's. Is 3 carats too much for someone that age? We have all seen pics of the high school girl rocking Mom's diamond necklace and Rolex President, and that is something I want to avoid too. The 3-stone option is very intriguing, not sure how it would look; none of the jewelers locally have anything comparable, nor do I want to waste their time as I can't afford the insane markup!

$30K budget?? I'd shoot for a top ideal cut H VS2 stone.

I'm a sucker for a solitare. I think there is nothing more classic and elegant than letting a single stone take center stage. But, I have seen many beautiful settings that are true works of art here on pricescope (go to the show me the bling board) if you think she wants a RING.

You have such a nice big budget there are so many things you can do.

I'm interested in seeing the answers about size.

I thought of that, but even standing outside, we both had trouble telling a J apart from a G or H....both looked pretty darn white. She commented that a slightly warmer look was nice. I see a lot of people over the course of my day, and most diamonds are running L or below from the look if it!

Then shop for a nice well cut J .

Your lady is in her 40's, she will easily be able to rock a big stone! Here are a couple of other threads that might help:

If you're happy with a J then how about this:

Have you considered an old cut?

You could use the rest of the budget to have someone like Victor Canera or Caysie van Bebber design a beautiful, elegant setting for it (have a look at their websites and IG feeds for lots of inspiration eye candy!).

If she wants size then get the 3ct, she may be disappointed otherwise. As a woman in her 40's I am sure she knows her mind. I think the bugger the stone the more obvious the tint but again if this doesn't bother her than who cares. Honestly I think get the 3ct. I am size 5 and I have a 2ct E colour which is quite dazzlingly white and I get self concious wearing it under the bright lights sometimes paying for my bread and wot not but that is me. I also live in a $3.5m home but drive an 11yr old F150 and leave my designer clothes only for special occassions. I am much more comfortable in jeans, ballet pumps and a wal mart T shirt. Some people have thought my ring is fake but they are people who don't know me and take me at face value. my neighbourhood with other fancy homes, most people don't have big rocks or at least they dont wear them day to day, and I do try and look ;). My point is wealth isn't a reason to buy or not buy something but her personality, what sort of thing she normally wears and most importantly what she WANTS is definitely reason.

This J that was pointed out earlier would be lovely and leave you enough for a 3 stone (talk about finger coverage)! No problem with
her being 40 years old and wearing a big rock (or three)!

I like this 3 stone setting...

Here is an image that shows 3 stone ratios you could use to figure out what size side stones to go with...

I think you need to find out her style preference.

I am mid 40s. I have a definitive preference for solitaires without side stones. I have never liked
the 3 stone on me. Other friends of mine have always loved 3 stone... or
halo... etc... but one thing we all have in common is we definitely have a preference.

Thank you! What is her personality? Most important for her is that I put a lot of work and thought into what I give her, and didn't just walk out of a jewelry store 5 minutes after walking in and slapping my credit card down on the table. Knowing her, she would be just as happy with a little .5ct vs a 3 carat; I do know how stunning these diamonds are and that she will want to "show it off" simply because I gave it to her. It is a symbol of our relationship, not a status symbol, and for that reason, I want her to have something impressive on her hand. My commitment to our future is much more important than the crap most guys waste money on; I am not a flashy person and drive a 16 year old truck, so I have you beat there....but it's a Toyota (so I have you beat twice :twirl: ) Doesn't lose value, and only requires gas and an oil change every 5k miles.

Mainly, I wanted to see what others thought of the size vs color. I saw Wink in another article mention that people tend to have preconceived notions about color, but when he puts 2 stones on the table at a given price point: one more colorless, the other larger, most people opt for larger. A hint of yellow still returns a lot more light if it is a 30% larger stone. My goal was to to hear testimonials about others' personal experiences.

Thanks for all of the help! I will look at the old mine cuts and similar too!

dumbo - I'm just a few years younger than your bride, and I just upgraded to a 3 carat old mine brilliant. It's gorgeous and not too much on my hand. Regarding a 3-stone where all diamonds are the same cut, that is a very specific look that women either like or don't, in my opinion. I prefer to see complimentary stones used instead of the same cut; example, nicely tapered baguettes look awesome with a large round diamond (or almost any shape to be honest), trillions look good with a radiant, etc. Personally, I'd advise steering clear of a 3-stone with all rounds unless she requested. When you have a large middle diamond, they can look a bit over-the-top (which is some people's pref, but I'd steer clear unless you know she wants that).

My upgrade is a K color. I've been married for a "few" years now, and I'm over the whole color part of the 4 C's. You know what the vast majority of people notice? Size and cut - and note I didn't say carat, because there are some 2.8 carat diamonds that look bigger than a 3.1 carat, if the smaller is ideally cut and the larger is poorly cut. I wanted a large diamond in a lower color over a smaller diamond in a colorless range because it looks better on my hand and makes me happy. So I say go on with your J, save some of your hard-earned $$$$ and have a dream setting made.

Just to throw in my 10 cents worth, I have a trilogy where all the stones are the same size, not huge admittedly, .40 each, just thought I'd share so you could see the look. As has been said, it's all down to personal preference, mine being equal sized stones rather than larger centre and smaller outers :D (sorry for the lousey photo!)

Not sure what you are looking for. Reference to your post about a "2.3"ctw ring.

Given that center stone, what would be the appropriate sized side stones be?

Dumbo,

We have found the most popular ratio to be a 2/1 center to side stone settings - for example, a 2 ct. center stone would be balanced with 1 ct. on either side. Due to your concern about a 3 ct. ring being too much diamond on her hand, however, you could easily consider a 2ct. center with .5-.75 on each side and it would look magnificent.

Another option to consider... a toi et moi ring, which could have two very substantial stones for $30k!
