Hi,

I have an emerald that was graded as F2 (Moderate Enhancement) by GIA. It seems that this could indicate fillers in addition to oil (such as resin and wax). However, GIA doesn't categorise the enhancemwnta as oil vs resin. Could you advise what F2 in a GIA emerald grading indicates. The jewellery shop in NY has marketed it as a simply oiled emerald. If that does not turn out to be the case, is there any recourse (eg., could we have a sound reasoning to return it since we did not get he full sisclosure,

Thanks,

- Nataraj.

You are correct on all points:
GIA F2 = moderate enhancement
Enhancement type is not detailed in the GIA report, so it could be oil or resin.
Unless you have paperwork stating from the shop stating clearly that it is oiled only and the emerald turned out to be resin filled, I don't think you have any recourse.

Just as FYI, resin (depending on the type) is gaining more acceptance because the treatment is not only stable but also permanent, unlike oil. Even if oiled, the level of oiling and the type of oil used matters as well.
