thats interesting, because to me in person diamond #2 actually caught my eye more and seemed more “sparkly” to me. go figure ♂
Hey all! Went to another vendor and saw some more diamonds. Here are two that caught my eye.
First is an H VS1 3.01ct 1.3 ratio. Excellent polish symmetry no fluorescence. Here are some pics and vids. I really liked this one, seemed to light up well throughout and I considered it “lively.” It also looked colorless to me, I couldnt tell any difference between this and the G and H colored diamonds.

Second here is an F VS1 Excellent polish symmetry medium fluorescence. I put it up against the window with some LA sunlight and it didn’t appear cloudy to milky to me. If anything there was a blue tint when placed in the sun, the vendor said that was a function of the colorless aspect. Otherwise I thought this diamond lit up ok, but there were some areas that did not light up as well for me. The H diamond also turned blue in the sun but it was more subtle.

I was able to see both diamonds in a brilliancescope under magnification as well. The H stone was more pink throughout. The F stone had more areas of more intense pink, but more areas of white. This seemed to match what I saw with my eyes in normal light.
Hope some of you take a look and give me your opinions. Appreciate it!
Exactly! That's why you have to see step cuts with your own eyes. All that matters is what you, and your soon to be fiancee, think. I would recommend looking at a lot more stones. See what length to width ratio, color, and clarity you prefer. Pay attention to the facet pattern, light leakage, etc. There are wonderful videos online that you can watch to glean a lot of information.
Jonathan (@Rhino), previously of Good Old Gold, used to post educational videos on YouTube. He currently is the owner of Distinctive Gem, and posts videos there as well. He also vets diamonds for customers. I had an excellent experience with him, and highly recommend him.
I'm sure the other tradespeople on here are excellent as well, so I would not hesitate to contact any of them.
However, checking out YouTube videos, nailing down the length to width ratio, and other specs you prefer, will really help the professionals, or the rest of us help you.
I would share links, but I'm not sure how to do it.
Thanks for the source! I’m watching some of rhino’s videos now.
I’m pretty much set on a L:W ratio of 1.3, colorless/white diamond to the eye, eyeclean at least a VS2. Trying to grasp what it means for an emerald cut to be “lively” and rhino has some nice diamonds. Now I know that I can get so much more performance out of an emerald cut.
Can you tell us your budget and we can show you what is available in your price range?
When you look at Emerald cuts you want to see
1) steps flashing on/off all the way into the center of the stone
2) even size steps
3) no black steps that stay black
4) nice windmills
Edit
5) not too many steps turned off or on at the same time
attaching some videos of a diamond i saw today. i thought it looked lively under office lights and in natural los angeles sunlight outside. would appreciate very much if some of you could share your opinions!
