Hello Gurus,

I am thinking about buying a nice 2 ct. emerald cut diamond (I VS2). Everything is fantastic about the rock except the table size which is 77%. The ratio is 1.47:1. Depth is 69%. LxW=8.7-5.92. Pav 55%. Girdle is thin/SMTH. Culet is none. Flor=Non.

The price is $9,600.

Two questions: 1) is this a good price; 2) what are the implications of the 77% table.

Have you seen this in person? A table that big usually gives a stone a bit of a glassy appearance and you''re likely to suffer from lack of fire in favor of more white light.

Yes. I''m a fairly casual observer, and i could not tell the difference between a 1.7 with a 69% tables and this one.

bdazed,

I love the ratio of your diamond. The price is WAY below average for a diamond of this quality and the cut is totally acceptable. I don''t know that the pav depth or girdle meant much of anything to me, but a 1.47 length-width is what emerald cuts are supposed to look like!

Go for it? or wait for a smaller table? This whole process is stressful.

It shouldn''t be... with no standard to speak of for Ecs, virtualy no one will say ''you know, this diamond doesn''t "measure up". There are different looks you may like more or less, but it is not easy to guess what the range may be with just two diamonds infront - both with reasonably similar profile. Maybe you did not see alot of difference betwenn the two, but perhpas there isn''t much at all! It takes more than the table % to change the looks and optics of a cut diamond.

Chrono (avatar) can probably tell this quite well. You may find his threads useful. Here they are: LINK about the table and depth story.

Hope the 0.2 helps

Guru's:

I just bought it and have an update on specifications:

Weight = 2.0 carats
Clarity = VS2
Color = I
Dimensions = 8.72mm-5.92x4.10 (ratio 1.47:1)
Polish = Very Good
Sym = Very Good
Girdle = thin / polished
Depth = 69%
Table = 77%
Crown = 13%
Pav = 55%
Flor = None
Culet = None
Price = $9,600

I was concerned about the table % but something else must be compensating for it because it looks dazzling compared with other, smaller tabled stones. Anyway, i'm no expert but I think one is safe with similar specifications. I'm getting it mounted now and will provide an update once the complete package is delivered.

Any ideas on what can compensate for table sizes that fall out of the specifications for an ideal cut (which is apparently 75% on the high end)?

I really like the crown. I can see why it looks dazzling in person.
