I posted in another thread about whether a depth of 63 and table of 62 could make for a nicely performing antique style cushion.

Here is the ASET:

And here is a pic of the diamond:

There's plenty of red in the ASET, but plenty of leakage too. But the leakage has a distinct pattern, so I'm wondering if the combination of the two could still make for a nice looking diamond? I only have experience of modern cuts so far and have bought my more recent stones with great ASETs (very little leakage, lots of red, some green, less blue).

Im hoping antique cushion experts might weigh in here. Anyone have an elongated antique style cushion like this? Or a diamond with an ASET similar to this? I'd love to hear feedback about how these look in person.

IDK, I just don't love it. I feel like all you would ever seen is a strong maltese cross and then mush in between. It might be worth seeing in person though. I've never relied on ASETs for old cuts. I'm not an expert though, just an antique cushion lover. I hope someone tells you it would be a great stone so you can ignore me.

What would those mushy areas look like in an F color stone? Dull grey areas?

I'm also not clear if the maltese cross would have the large black reflections (contrast?/ obstruction?) I have seen in some of the other antique style cushions posted here. Im not a big fan of that look personally.

Like others have said, it will have a strong cross. I think it is a very early style cushion, which is closer to an OMC with a smaller culet. It reminds me of a peruzzi TBH, rather than the older cushions which have a less strong cross pattern. The facets between may or may light up...its hard to know without a video. Can you get a video?

Here's a very cool elongate cushion/capsule. http://www.jewelsbygrace.com/2-38ct-cushion-cut-gia-f-vvs-2

Interesting you mentioned the peruzzi cut - I love that cut! That diamond cutter (is it Yoram?) has some beautiful designs. I was kind of hoping that this one might perform a bit like some of his.

Love that example from jewels by grace. There are definitely similarities between that one and the one I am considering, except for the size and shape of the culet and the size of the central two pavillion facets.

Here is the video for the diamond. I didn't want to post it because I had a diamond on hold before with that vendor which got "released" without me knowing so I've been nervous about posting it.

It is so very interesting. Compare it to this one, which is a August Vintage cushion. You can see in both that the cross is pretty stable, in terms of visibility, but how the light moves on the facets between is very different. I'm on the fence. I would not have selected this myself by the visual performance, but that does not mean it won't be good. I'm not much help on this one :(2

What you really need is to be able to buy it and have it evaluated by a US-based expert as to if you should keep it or keep looking. I wonder if a vendor like DiamondsbyLauren or GoodOldGold could call this for you. You'd buy through them and they could help you determine if this is a good cushion or not.

You can't really compare this stone to AVC, which is more square.

The stone has alot of light leakage, but that is expected from an elongated cushion. This applies to Yoram's elongated cushion cut.

I 100% agree with your assessment.
I think it is a pretty stone, although it is not for everyone.

I don't like the one you asked about. An AVC is going to blow that stone out of the water! I have one and would not sacrifice cut. It is possible to find a unicorn great antique cut cushion, and there are a few people here who after searching for months or years have found one.

This one that rockysalamander posted is an excellent example of a well cut stone. Just gorgeous!

If you give us your budget, we could search further. The one above is very reasonably priced if it happens to be in the size range you want.

Its sounding as though most people are warning me off this one. Not sure if I'm ready to let it go just yet, although JA will want a decision very soon.

In terms of finding an alternative, its not as straightforward as just finding other antique cushions. Im not primarily looking for an antique cushion, Im looking for an elongated shape with large facets, strong symmetry in the facet pattern, with a nice spread and as good a light performance as I can get. I've also been considering Daussi cushions (I like some of the facet patterns) but Im aware that they are often too shallow and prone to windowing. Asoka's, spring cuts, crisscuts, elongated antique designs (not the wonky variety) or anything else elongated that is not an emerald or radiant cut, but looks different and distinctive (no sharp corners though - must be clipped or rounded.

Budget is up to $4500, looking for eye clean and H color upwards, around the 1ct mark.

Easy eh?
