I wish I had found this forum before I purchased my ring, but life is full of lessons and this is a big one for me. My parents bought a ring yesterday and showed it to me last night. It was real nice, a .7ct center diamond with two .24 diamonds on the side. On inspection I notcied what appeared to be a small nick on the top of the big stone. I took out my 16x magnifier and noticed it in better detail. Now I know about inclusions, but was unsure about this, so we went back to the store today, and the inhouse jeweler said it was an inclusion really close to the surface. He showed me the EGL cert which showed the marking and hence I felt like an idiot. Then I thought to myself "I know nothing about EGL!" So I did some research and found that there are many EGL subcompanies with only EGS-US certificates being allowed in the United States. Dunno if this is true or not. Now my certificate says on the top: THE CANADIAN DIAMOND CERTIFICATE. It then says the weight. shape and cut, proportions, finsih, clarity grade and color grade. On the bottom is says MADE IN CANADA withthe EGL hologram with a facsimile of an EGL USA representative. I know any tom dick and harry can make their own grading company. Is my EGL certificate reliable? Is it a good enough grading party to but faith in. Can I rest easy giving this ring to a loved one, or should I be tossing and turning with night sweats and tachycardia at night? Is there a different EGL-US certificate and EGL canada certificate? Thank you for your time and knowledge.

In this case I''d highly recommend finding an independent appraiser to evaluate the stones before making the decision to keep or return the ring.

welcome to ps!
perhaps this link will help you http://www.eglusa.com/about.html

Not all diamond grading labs are the same. Some will be more strict in how the they grade a diamond than others. Some will give one diamond a better grade than others. Sometimes the same lab will give two different grades for the same diamond at two different times.
It is my experience that EGL is not as strict as AGS and GIA.
However remember you bought a beautiful ring with 3 diamonds in a mounting not an investment. If the ring speaks to you and did not cost more than you felt it was worth enjoy it.

I had to exchange the ring. The center stone was VS2 and F. I did some research and found that you are not supposed to see inclusions with the naked eye on a VS2 but this one was easy for me to see. I went back to the store and exchanged it for a GIA certified diamond that was VS2 but G color. Needless to say I examined the stone for about 2 hours. I''m only buying GIA certified diamonds from now on. Thank you everybody who posted on this.
