I have been following all you chicks on the eggsellent thread, but have had nothing to contribute. Much like the two in question.

However, I now have a question which is eggistential to this thread.

I buy fresh eggs from someone, and mine are always lovely shades of brown. My mom buys fresh eggs at her health food shop. I got hers out one day to see how many she had left, and two of them were THE most beautiful shade of pale green I''ve ever seen. I seriously was swooning over these eggs. I didn''t want to put them away! So, my question is, does that have something to do with what they are fed? or the species of chicken?

both

My aunt had some chickens that laid both brown and white eggs from the same chicken.

Generally speaking, the color is dependent on the breed. A good laying breed happens to lay white eggs and are therefore used in supermarkets often. Restaurants often choose brown eggs due to the ease of spotting stray shells.

Ellen, there are a couple of breeds that lay blue and green eggs--the Ameraucana breed and the Araucana. There are also chickens that possess the blue/green egg gene but are not purebred and they refer to them as Easter Eggers.

Sorry to to a fly by yesterday and this morning. DH and I spent all day yesterday working out how to finance our radiators without luck. Then we saw B&Q sell a version that we loved and they were on sale today

. So we had to drop everything and rush out today to buy them all up; we couldn''t be happier. It was a great day - and, we didn''t hit one red light in traffic. A great day!

So thank you all for stopping by

DH obliged me by not removing the egg until I got our camera. So these are real time shots of us viewing and removing our precious eggie!

Edit: After producing my eggie we shoo'ed the girls out of their pen so they could stretch their legs in the long grass. They enjoyed pecking, scratching and nibbling on the long seedy grass. We would love to have them out and about during the day so this was just their first of many visits outside of the pen.

This shows a shop bought free range egg v's my fresh eggie. It really is much smaller but I like to think of it as a starter egg. I'm sure they will get bigger. Is this right Lore? You mentioned they will take a while to produce standard eggs.

Edit: I wasn't telling porky pies earlier. I didn't buy any eggs as I had faith in my girls. These were just out of date.
